What the fuck difference does it make to replace "enroll" with "register?" They are damn near identical in menaing. Probably because one implies it's voluntary, the other that it's not? Because those Romans were all about the rights of the individual, y'know. Hey, it's a real life Supply-side Jesus!

My (Jewish) take on this:
All translations are inaccurate to some degree. The only perfect version is the original Hebrew. The Septuagint was pretty damn close, but even it is imperfect.
Also, the entire New Testament is a load of camel shit.
Really, they can do whatever the hell they like. I'll stick with my Artscroll Chumash, and keep a Hebrew-English dictionary around so I can clarify any passages.

I'm in no way surprised, but completely tickled by the way Christian conservatives now feel even the BIBLE is too liberal for them.
Yes, I'm broad brushing, but only for humour value.

They chaged it to "intellectuals" to promote their secular political views and make them Biblicaly justifiable. They view people who earn a wage with their brains rather than their hands as the modern version of Pharisees; hypocritical, power-hungry murderers running the entire country. This, from a bunch of senators and powerful authors.

As a theolgian of some 60+ years of experience, you sir, have hit the nail on the head. I would also go back further to the Babylonian and Sumerian bed-time stories for the kids (the Creation - 11 versions! and the Flood - scifi/action novel by Gilgamesh) which somehow - after much massaging - got into being religious tale. The New Testament is a crock of shit, conjured up by a roman emporer, desperatley trying to hold together a failing empire, whilst shifting thr blame for Rome's past misdeeds onto those they oppressed the most. That is one of the main reasons why I became atheist 23 years ago, as have many of my fellow theologians around the world.

I'm fascinated. Are you saying that everything said about the New Testament-- that it was written by the disciples and was a real account of what Jesus did, as well as a supposedly obvious prophecy regarding the End Times-- is actually a put-on? I'm not trying to contest you; I'm actually really curious. This is the first time I've ever encountered such a bold claim. I want to know more!

Couldn't they just write and edit a study bible with pages of commentary and a heavily annotated text with loads of footnotes? Sort of like what Kirk Cameron did with The Origin of Species. Other cottage industry Fundies have an actual annotated Koran to sell, in order to prove all "true" Muslims are at least potential terrorists or terrorist sympathizers
That's what a business savvy demagogue would do. (I don't want to give them any ideas.)
This goofy semantic substitution is going to get the Fundies all worked up. I can't imagine any self-respecting Evangelical carrying The American Conservative Edition, The New Conservative King James Version, Modern Conservative Version, or Conservative Patriot Version, etc., with them to church.

Who said anything about mentioning the name of this book? its just gonna be 'the bible'. every time someone quotes this it won't be "the Conservative Translation by a Handful of Far-Right Loons says..." its gonna be "The Bible says...". Anyone living in America who has heard of something called 'the religious right' knows exactly why they would want "the bible" and "the opinions of a handful of far right loons" to be synonyms.

Another awesome hit from the wiki party echo chamber created by, and for, intellectually stunted people who demand 24/7/365 insulation from reality.

Wow, I impressed a theologian? Cool. Always at your service. On average, Christianity has been directly responsible for the needless deaths of 1630 innocent people per day since the 4th century. Satanism was bourne directly out of the excesses of enforced christianity, but the fundmentalists dispute this (of course)
