Initially it was for finding bin Laden, at this point, the reason we're in Afghanistan seems to be we're there this year because we were there last year. I see.

Vene's right, we're there because we can't leave. At present, no one has legitimate power in Afghanistan, not the Taliban, not the government, not the local (feudal) warlords, not the western forces. Can we leave the country in this state, worse than it was when we invaded? Yes, I say "we", Norway participates in this war. Our politicians have long denied it, and renamed the situation several times. They've called it all kinds of things, but not what it really is: A war!

Record troop deaths compared to what? In Afghanistan since the start of the war there. We went into Afghanistan after 9/11 to dispose of the Taliban and capture bin Laden. To 'win' in Afghanistan we have to help the Afghani people. When we first went in things were good and if we would have done more to build up communities and the people we wouldn't be where we are now. But we focused on Iraq and now the corruption in Afghanistan is almost as bad as it was prior to 9/11. Government officials who aren't corrupt or who are less corrupt are targets for suicide attacks prompting many of them to resign. And Afghanistan is a third world country in the rural areas the people believe whatever they hear first. So when the Taliban says Americans set off the IED in the market they believe it. What we have to do is make Afghanistan safe. Which is hard because the insurgents in the region have had 8 years to learn our tactics. They know how long we take to respond, they know our standard operating procedures and they know the people. The Afghani people are caught in the middle; air strikes and bad info get civilians killed by soldiers and bombings and scare tactics get them killed by insurgents. So they side with whichever side promises them safety at that moment.
