As the title has stated, I plan on returning to college in January. Hmm maybe I should say....starting over....anyway, I messed up by going to ITT Tech for 2 years and I went there for computers, funny thing is....after a year actually in the industry of computers....I have to say I was always a computer fan...which is why I figured I would like it...sadly...after much consideration and thought (about 2 years now...I started having doubts about a year into ITT Tech) I decided computers are best left as a fun hobby for me. As for my career change I am looking into the Culinary Arts. I've wanted to be a chef since I was in the 7th grade and got to experience the cooking side of Home Ec. So I am looking at going that route As a bit of back history...the reason for me going to ITT Tech for computers was more of a parents push than me bringing it up. Apparently one of my moms friends kids went there for computers and loved it....and my parents agreed to pay 75% of my college if I went for computers. Meh I know poor choice on my part. But at least I am back tracking and making it up by going back to college as Culinary Arts as my Major and keeping my dream of being a chef alive.

I'm 33 years old, and have decided to get my first degree next year - going back to school is scary and weird (I'm studying correspondance, since I have a full time job already.)
Good luck to you!

Good for everybody who wants to go back! Going to school after you've been out for a while can be scary; make sure you look into some kind of support structure (other people who are also "nontraditional" or who are also taking correspondence courses) -- that's really critical to helping you finish out.

Hurray for school! I'd love to see the method of teaching in various Culinary Arts classes. It sounds fascinating.

I, too, am considering going to college. Already taken notes on places/dates to go take the ACT and all that happy shit. Considering my mom works for the state, I get half off tuition, combine that with my mental issues, I should be able to get a pretty much free ride.
What am I planning to go into? Nursing. Preferably in Diagnostics.

I'm taking a grad course this semester, my first in 4 years.
It took a while for me to work up the motivation, but I'm sorta glad I did it.
Research is fun once it's going. It's the getting going that's tough.

Well I just hit a speed bump. Pretty big one at that. Currently I work full time, and I just got done with the tour the campus part of it. I learned that sadly classes for the major I want to do aren't offered at night. They are just day classes. So I am not sure how to go about this. My parents aren't really a option since they live too far away from the college (we are talking a hour and half minimum away) and obviously with job offerings close to non existence I don't know how I can make it work. Note too this is a community college so no dorms etc like traditional colleges. Just when things were looking good - they get complicated.

Is there any way you can adjust your work schedule around your classes? My boyfriend told his boss that he was starting college and gave him his class schedule. His boss gave him hours around that schedule.

I'm really proud of you guys in this thread going to school and pursuing what you love. Seriously, it makes me smile because I almost didn't go to college myself. I thought I couldn't handle it, but it turns out I'm not just "handling" it--I'm actually making good grades. Going back to school isn't as hard as some people make it out to be. Everyone here is definitely has the brains. Hell, I thought you guys all would have had really impressive educations and degrees in comparison to me. When I graduated high school, my inadequacy issues, social anxiety, and other mental problems made me flip out about going to college. I had everything in place, but nothing ever came of it. After a couple of dead-end grocery-store jobs, my parents were nice enough (more like I was psychologically fucked-up enough) to let me take a couple of years off from life to get some therapy and pull myself together so I could go to college. I still got a long way to go on the "pull myself together" part, but I've made enough progress to get back in school. I think that alone is a major feat itself. Originally I was going to just get an Associates degree in Information Technology; my inadequacy issues told me that was all I could handle, but now I'm a third-year undergrad student double-majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics, and so far I've never had less than 4.0 GPA. ::knocks on wood:: I'm very, very proud of myself because I was seriously so messed up that I couldn't see myself amounting to anything or doing something with my life. Since starting school, though, I found a part-time job at a small community college teaching CompTIA computer-certification classes, and I've found my calling in education--ironically the very thing I was terrified of. I need a grad degree to really pursue a real career as a post-secondary educator, so I'm going to be doing the grad-school thing when I finish my Bachelors if my brain's not too fried from getting edumakated.
