I just got hit with a piece of malware pitching an anti-spyware known as "Anti-Virus Live."
It's blocking me from activating my current anti-virals and anti-malwares, and is also keeping me from using IE.
Any ideas on how I can whack this?
Thanks.

I just got hit by a similar malware called Antivirus Pro and had to reformat my computer a few weeks ago. This kind of shit pisses me off royally.

Every time something like this happens, someone rather quickly puts up a step-by-step guide to removing it. Just google the name of the virus and you should find it.
Also, [insert shameless plug for OSX here].

What I did was power the system down (via killing the outlet box everything's plugged into) and restarted it in safe mode. Once in safe mode, I hit it with Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware, AVG Free, Eusing Registry Cleaner, and Spy-Bot in that order. It looks like it purged everything, but it did foul the browsing history on IE (I did a full delete just to be safe).

Why in the blue pits are you still using that pos browser known as IE? Go get Firefox, now. No-script and ad-block+ installed as well, please and thank you.

Antivirus Pro is an evil piece of work too. I ended up having to delete it by hand, it took me hours.

I don't know why, but I take particular glee in butchering passing malware when it decides to come my way. Nope, I don't just out-and-out delete it, I take a hex editor to it and mangle its guts. Of course, this can produce...undesirable results, but I think its a funny way of telling those virus-making fucks "fuck you!"

If I had more skill at computers, I'd rig something up to where if I ever got hit again I'd get an IP trace. That way, I could hand their asses over to the cops.

Well, its what I'd assume would be a similar (albeit more powerful) rush to screwing around in a person's guts. Well...actually...I think I'd prefer a person, my computer would be harder to replace.

If I'm not mistaken firefox has an add-on that opens a tab that mimics IE, thus allowing you to use sites that only support IE. However, whenever you start using firefox you're automatically 5% furry. Them's the rules.

You DO realize that most of the IP's you wound find wound be the innocent person who infected you, not the person who made the virus, right? Also, what Trevy said.

I'm rather late to this thread, but I just wanted to say that skyfire isn't the only person whose computer got infected with Antivirus Live on December 24. I got infected while using Firefox, but it only kept IE from working. The infection appears to have started while I was on these forums. Does anyone know if there was some ad or something on here that started it?

Police reaction to someone providing an IP address they believe is the source of malware that hit their computer: "Um...ok. So?"
