Yeah, I was in college before I ever met a male clarinet player, and even later for male flute players. I actually know a fair few now. I don't know if it was because they were considered girl instruments, or it just happened that way. :/ ottery: if you're biting on the reed you're definitely doing it wrong. Though I have the same problem with spit flying out of it sometimes. Not sure if there's anything can be done about that; sometimes it just happens.

See we don't get that here in the UK, at least not iduring my school days. There are instruments that tend to be played more by a certain gender (flute players for example, seem to be largely female despite the most famous one being male), but if a boy plays the flute nobody considers it "girly" or "gay". And as for the whole geek stigma attached to orchestral instrument playing in the States, over here the bullies, "jocks" (don't really have jocks like American schools do) and other tossers don't give a shit. They'll make fun of you for being fat, thin, tall, short, hairy, hairless, poor, rich, being smart and being stupid, but they won't make fun of you for playing an orchestral instrument. Well, personally, I just got shit for being a "goth," which seems to translate into "wears black and has at least one piece of jewelry." Being a band geek never factored in. Also, I slightly had that Patrick/Kat rep from 10 Things I Hate About You. But I digress. I don't know about the band geek stereotype for sure, but I do know you got shit for playing a "girl's" instrument. Never known a male flute player, by the way. Not that I'd care, mind. I'm not one to cast stones on gender issues, period. Plus, I grew up a major Queen fan. People already assumed I was massively gay. BTW, does playing bass with your thumb count as authentic?

Some of the best flute and clarinet players are men. Sir James Galway, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Ian Anderson, Benny Goodman, etc......I don't really know any famous female flute or clarinet players.

If you do take up bass, don't use a pick. True Bassists use their fingers. No offense to Ganja, his was actually some amusing playing. I use both. The songs I played (Mogwai) required picking. Usually when I finger-pick its because I play the bass like an acoustic guitar, but if I'm down-tuning I use a pick. I also use a violin bow, a screwdriver and a brush, does that make me an impure bassist? Well played.

So what's the big deal in America with playing instruments at school? You're culture's weird. Mind you, I shouldn't be suprised considering this is the same country where reading books is considered weird/nerdy (according to your own TV shows and movies anyway).

A screwdriver? That actually sounds pretty awesome. Unless it's not the screwdriver I'm thinking of. I hope so. It's far more impressive on the guitar though.

Clarinet wasn't really girly, in Northern California. Flute totally was though.
I started to learn, during a two week summer thing where we picked a brass and a woodwind instrument to learn, then stopped when I was repeatedly told that I should've picked the sax, because playing the flute was gay.
So I can play trumpet/french horn, also percussion, including keyboard instruments, and the piano. And the guitar, though I'm awful at that.
I still wish I could play the flute.

I played the clarinet in the fourth grade.
Also, in my high school, the band kids were some of the most popular kids in school.
