This story makes me seethe with rage - for a couple different reasons, actually, though I'm not going to get into that right now. Suffice it to say, though, almost every aspect of this is far beyond ridiculous and just eye-rollingly stupid.

Heh, I just read that she's now trying to sue to force the school district to hold the dance. I think it's a good way to try and stop the school district from pinning the blame on her.

THANK YOU. I wanted to skip graduation, but my mom wouldn't let me. I skipped mine. My mum couldnt care less. Considering that I never actually knew anybody from my year level. There was just no point. Plus if I went, I wouldnt even get anything for it

I went to my Junior prom, which was fun because my best friend and I decided to go stag together. It was common for the school where I went to because I went to an all girls Catholic school (from grades 9th-11th). It was more fun, in my opinion, to hang out with a bunch of your friends at prom than the alternative. I decided to make money and go to work rather than go to my Senior prom. From the looks of it, the ACLU got involved, and if they were going to take this to court if the discrimination persisted. The school had two options: either let the girl take her girlfriend to prom or cancel the it. This was just a d-bag move. Tell us more about the All-Girl Catholic School...and provide details if you can. Ironbite-this might not be the best forum for this.

My school, for reasons that no one has ever understood, refuses to hold graduations at the school like sane people. They schlep classes of 500+ kids to Washington to graduate in Constitution Hall. I wanted to skip that, too, but my mother wouldn't let me. It was the most painfully boring five hours ever.

My graduation was at Red Rocks Amphitheater near Denver, which is apparently very slightly famous and in late May was only about 84657 degrees in those damn black robes.

My graduation took place on my school's football field.
As for prom, I didn't plan on going, but then this whole debacle happened and I got a date. So we went, and it was pretty fun. Even more fun was the after party and the journey home because it was 7 in the morning and we had no clue what was going on.

I admit, I went to both my junior and senior proms. I had a good time at both.
While I understand why someone would not want to go to prom, I think that is getting way off-topic here. Whether proms are good or bad is another discussion. The point is, this girl WANTS to go to the prom. And the school is punishing everyone at that school that wanted to go to the prom because one girl wanted to take her girlfriend.

Well I'm sure ill be in the minority here, but i agree with the school. There is no law stating that a school HAS to give its students a prom, i have seen schools cancel them for many reasons, and reading the news, it seems they worded their decision in such a way, it would be hard to prove they canceled it on account of the lesbian, though I'm sure they did. she's not being denied enrollment, or access to a class, its a dance, its a social function, and i think the school should be able to decide who can and cant go. IF they cant, then they have the right to just not have it at all. Last i heard you cant force some one to have an OPTIONAL event. I don't see this harming anyone. I just see it as a way for the school to avoid a problem. its a legal way to say "We don't agree with this, were not going to budge, neither will you, so were not going to do it at all". So in short i agree with the school.
Anyways prom is a waste of money in my opinion, regardless of sexual orientation.

I went to prom once. I didn't have a date, I just went with a few friends. It was lame and not fun. Also, I couldn't see anything because a friend of mine decided I look better without my glasses, so she stole them from me.
I went to graduation, too. It was kind of okay.

You're missing the point. Your own hatred of school functions aside, she decided to go to prom with her girlfriend, which OTHERS DO, and the school was so aghast that there were LESBIANS? IN MY HIGH SCHOOL? That they took prom away for everybody and blamed it on her for being a DIRTY LESBIAN RUINING IT FOR ALL THE REGULAR PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO GO TO PROM IN PEACE.

Then I guess it's not "hard to prove" since everyone, including the guy defending the school, thinks it's because of the lesbian issue. She's being denied the right to attend a school-sponsored event. It's very simple: Public school event=no discrimination. You have the event, you don't discriminate. Well, this isn't "someone," it's an arm of the state. But yes, there is no legal right to a school prom. But more importantly, you're right that a school has the legal right to be awful. They have the legal right to do terrible things to the entire student body for bigoted reasons. In fact, I'll do you one better: I agree they should have the right to cancel the prom at their own discretion. I just believe they should reserve exercising it for when there's a good reason. I don't see any student having much of a case in favor of the school reinstating a prom that it is within it's discretion to cancel, but it doesn't mean that it's not a dick move. Really? How about "It's taking a prom away from students who want to go to the prom." A completely invented problem, one that wouldn't exist if the administration would just grow up and stop tilting at gay windmills. Well, the problem is that they don't agree with it. They should. Or at least, they shouldn't care. (I don't so much "agree" with homosexuality as I feel it's something nobody has the right to be concerned with and should stop thinking about and go about their business.) Yeah, I know. I'm still trying to figure out why. Okay, that's not really relevant. I think LOST is boring, overlong, and dragged out, but I don't want the cable company to drop ABC over it.
