Oh, this whole "violent video games make people murderers!!" bullshit again? It was nonsense 10 years ago, it's still nonsense now. Don't forget the "muder simulators" or whatever he called them. Crime statistics have been slightly up over the last couple of years, but this is after a thirty year low. We're still more violent than most other western cultures, but....We don't even have the most violent media.

Oh, this whole "violent video games make people murderers!!" bullshit again? It was nonsense 10 years ago, it's still nonsense now. I hate that bullshit. Same as the music shit, when everyone was all in an uproar over violent lyrics, as if these kids don't spew profanities and "harsh language" with their buddies.

My dad used to let me listen to rap when I was young. His reasoning? It was probably no worse than what I hear on the playground. I mean, it may be a coincidence, but he was right. I heard "nigger," faggot," and "bastard" before I ever heard a rap or metal act say it. Learned "Motherfucker" from the school bus driver. Learned "fuck" and "shit" from hearing my parents cuss when something went wrong. Not exactly their faults. Plus, they're still nowhere near as at fault as the school system.

I just don't understand what is wrong with profanity in the first place. I can berate somebody just as easily without using it. I also frequently curse and swear around friends in a friendly way.

I'm a public school student. My language is terrible, and I partly blame the school system. When you're in third grade and your teachers are dropping f-bombs everywhere and when you get to middle school, everything gets shot to shit. I'm usually better about it on the Internet, because I hit backspace and clean up my language. But IRL? It's gotten really bad, and I have to constantly watch what I say, especially at home so I don't upset my parents. Well, what can I say? Swear as you like, it does not affect me.

They could ban all modes of recreation except bible study and there would still be massacres.
Hell, massacres would probably skyrocket under that doomsday scenario.

There's something people refuse to understand, and that is the fact that any given communicative production of humanity (language, art, etc) is inherently meaningless. Words, pictures, and most non-contact physical actions are nothing more than tools and symbol sets the meaning of which is defined by social agreement and acceptance. The only truth they can carry is that which we assign, and the only power they can ever hold over us is that which we give them. This is a simple anthropological fact. Emotive interaction and reaction is by its nature the very essence of self-fulfilling prophecy. The same is true for any given youngster's reaction to playing a video game or listening to a song. The way they behave following its play is (barring certain abnormal neurological patterns) entirely dependent on how they have been taught to perceive it. If they have not been taught, they will make a choice based on their life experiences which also have taught them how to perceive, though arguably indirectly.
Here's a little sample of truth in the form of a song from South Pacific:
You've got to be taught To hate and fear You've got to be taught From year to Year It's got to be drummed in your dear little ear You've got to be carefully taught
You've got to be taught To be Afraid Of people whose eyes are oddly made And people whose skin Is a different shade You've got to be carefully taught
You've got to be taught Before it's too late Before you are 6 or 7 or 8 To hate all the people your relatives hate You've got to be carefully taught
The same truth presented in that song in reference to racism and the like applies across the board to virtually all forms of human interaction and thought.
