Has anyone ever seen it? It's a tv show hosted by Bob Ross where he completes an entire painting in half an hour, teaching basic painting techniques along the way. Here's a link to the Wiki page describing the show. I just saw an episode where he painted a large winter cabin scene. He made it look incredibly easy. Each stroke had its own purpose, and even if it looked silly initially, he brought everything together in a matter of seconds to form a beautiful landscape. The entire thing was rather fascinating, really. Does anyone here use similar techniques with artwork, or are yours the complete opposite of his?

I LOVE BOB ROSS! Some of my earliest memories actually involve watching The Joy of Painting. I haven't watched the show for about two years. People used to have episodes uploaded on YouTube, but they were all taken down. I've done two digital Bob Ross style paintings, I'll link them here. Morning in the ValleyMidnight MountainsI did a couple actual paintings back in the day when I was in the school art club, I used his techniques. I'd love to do some now, but the materials can get costly. If you're interested, you should try your hand at it.

"We'll just put a happy little bush down here...it'll be our little secret...AND IF YOU TELL ANYONE, I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU!"
In seriousness, Bob Ross was awesome, and apparently high pretty much all of the time.

Fuck yeah, Bob Ross! That show is older than dirt, but still good to watch. I'd love to get into painting more but I never have time anymore.
@hades: I'm following you on dA now. ^_^

Bob Ross is awesome. My wife and I also used to watch his Chinese equivalent, Ning Yeh. Like Ross, he does gorgeous paintings in the space of a single episode (sometimes two for the more complex ones) and every brush stroke has a purpose. He can even get gradated colors in a single stroke by loading the brush with two colors.

Bob Ross!!
I love that man. Whenever I'm feeling sad or can't sleep, I watch one of the episodes I illegally downloaded (yes, I broke the law to download The Joy of Painting) He makes me stupidly happy, especially everytime he cleans his brush and uses the phrase "beat the devil outta it".
In my defense, he is a huge part of my childhood. When I was a little girl, I used to fall asleep for my afternoon naps watching his show. His voice is better than all the white noise in the world.
There is a part of me that, because I have absolutely no artistic skill, is green with envy though.

Oh, there's a show just like this on my local community TV station: Masterclass in oils with Ken Harris. The format's more or less exactly the same and it is indeed quite fascinating to watch how it's done and the paintings themselves are really nice. It almost makes me want to take up painting again...

You used to paint? I've never been good at it. By the time I'm done nothing properly flows and my strokes are merely individual blobs. Then again, that was back in elementary school.

Likewise. I only did it because my mum got me to do it back when I was about 7 or 8. As one would expect from someone who's both a little kid and has no artistic talent whatsoever, everything I painted was actually about 80% done by the art teacher rather than me and it was still horrid.
Yeah, I think I'll stick to science.

I recently started painting again after a looooooong stretch (read: years) of not having the space or the money, and I'm loving it.

I'm like the only person in the world who doesn't really see what's so special about Bob Ross's paintings.

I'm sure some artists would agree that the paintings themselves weren't actually that great. In fact, I remember a few of them were downright mediocre. His paintings weren't meant to be hung in the Louvre, yet I would still kill to own one. It's not to say that he wasn't awesome painter, because he definitely was. The point is, his paintings were done in a half hour or less, what do you expect?
What made Bob dear to me, and most people, I think, was Bob himself. He was a sweet and super laid back guy, he loved animals, and he just wanted to teach you how to paint. He could make anyone who thought they had no artistic talent find that they did. He was also a storyteller. Silent moments on the show were few and far between. He could just ramble on and it would mellow me out.
There's never been anyone like him before or since. R.I.P. Bob.
