His show is amazing, even though I don't use his "wet-on-wet" technique, and have yet to spread a canvas with liquid white. His brush strokes are something to watch, and learn from. Since I use a dry surface, I would just need to use more turpentine to get a slick effect, I would think.
He's more art instructor than great artist, although last week I've seen him do something Impressionist-like, so he has varied his style on occasion. After all he did 380 shows over twelve years. He wanted to get people started with painting, I'm sure he would be thrilled that any of his television students would branch out, beyond landscapes.
The show is on the PBS affiliated cable channel Create, about twice a week. In fact, I have started to record his shows to DVD.

Does anyone remember another PBS show with some guy drawing M. C. Escher-type mindfuck stuff? I can't for the life of me remember what it was, but I remember watching and doodling along with the show. I couldn't have been more than 5 years old at the time.

The only other art show I remember on PBS is "Blitz On Cartooning", hosted by Bruce Blitz. Basically he did caricatures and other cheesy cartoon drawings. My aunt taped a few episodes for me when I was like 9.

Are you talking about the guy with the markers who would draw like alien stuff? He had the awesome crazy hair and would wear orange jumpsuits? If you are, his name is Mark Mothersbaugh and he can be seen now on the popular (yet often scary) kiddie show Yo Gabba Gabba. To Bob Ross and his painting, I HATED it. He could draw in a 30 minute show show something that I couldn't even hope to accomplish given 30 days. Of course, he has more talent right now than I ever dreamed about.

Likewise. I only did it because my mum got me to do it back when I was about 7 or 8. As one would expect from someone who's both a little kid and has no artistic talent whatsoever, everything I painted was actually about 80% done by the art teacher rather than me and it was still horrid. Yeah, I think I'll stick to science. Sadly I'm no good at either art or science lol. Or anything really to be honest.

One time in art class - when I was about eight or nine - we had to do portraits of each other. The teacher actually held mine up to the class as an example of what not to do

What a jackass teacher. It's fucking art class for young kids. You don't make a negative example of their work in front of the entire class. Doesn't exactly help a kid's self esteem, you know?

If she'd said something like, "Your perspective doesn't work here, and you should remember your light source", then I could understand. But what is upsetting is that she held it up, said "This is awful! Who did this one?", and then had me stand in front of the class while she verbally tore it apart.
To be fair, it was a pretty terrible picture, but that's no excuse.
