www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTQ_Gg17k3g&feature=relatedBeneath the Veil is a documentary filmed in Afghanistan not long before the Taliban was overthrown. The host, whose father was from pre-Taliban Afghanistan, takes many risks in order to expose the numerous human rights abuses that took place there under the former government's strict theocracy, focusing primarily upon women. She also investigates the effect these laws had on children, and interviews refugees living in Pakistan. It's a moving and thought-provoking documentary. Apologies if this has already been posted, but I felt it was worth sharing. Edit: Fixed the link. The rest of the series is linked from the first video.

scary - this is why I'm always surprised any woman with any self respect would fight for an organized religion. You really have to hate yourself or be brainwashed to look at these things and think this is Okay.

I was in the mountains of a not to be named Afgani province tracking a target. He was travelling with his wife and when I first scoped him he had just struck her with a riding crop. Yes..a riding crop normally used for camels. So I waited until he raised his hand again and re-painted the desert. I hate the human right's abuses that go on..women are treated merely as breeders and property which is a personal pet peeve of mine. Add violence to that mixture and it makes a very unhappy Ranger.
Just wait until the women get sick of it. You think angry men with guns are bad? Ask the Russians about how effective female snipers were during WW2. The Taliban fighters could have quite the problem on their hands. Let's hope it happens soon.

There's been some fighting back from the women in Saudi Arabia, there's a thread around here somewhere on it. Hopefully it spreads to the other countries.

I think it was the 80s)

Such oppression is horrible. It is good to see women standing up against it.

It's bad when even the governent thinks you too harsh. Probably because the Wahhabists have been actively trying to overthrow the "corrupt, decadent" saudi monarchy.

Personally, I think it's amazing (and horrifying) that the Taliban somehow managed to outdo the Saudi government in its mistreatment of women.

That's... a generalization to say the least.

That's... a generalization to say the least. Haven't met a holy book yet that doesn't have something nasty in it about women that some sect or another hasn't seized those bits and ran with them... Not saying everyone who is religious harps on them - just that many of the larger oraganizations do in one way or another.

Guru Granth Sahib, as far as I know. Everything is equal in Sikhism, to my knowledge (I was taught it in year 7)
