I found this on the Washington Post discussion forum in a discussion about the DC Council passing a law to recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere.
"cmaryfitz wrote: I'm a straight, married woman, and I'm sitting here trying to be come a lesbian, and it doesn't seem to be working. Can someone please tell me how it is you choose to do this? No matter what I try, I still prefer men."
I just thought it was funny and wanted to share. ;D

I think that's the point, Eric. She's mocking those who claim that sexual orientation is a choice.

When I was in high school, I once had a teacher ask rhetorically who would actually choose to be gay in today's social climate, at least for the long term. There's too much stupid pointed at them to make it a worthwhile choice.

They never came up with anything better than "people who were abused by gays and hate Gawd". Wouldn't being abused by someone make you LESS likely to want to choose to follow in their footsteps orientation-wise?

As it happens, people subjected to significant trauma typically break in two ways. One is to identify with the attacker, and thereafter to perpetuate the cycle; I seriously doubt this applies to sex of victims, but there's SOME kind of logic there. (The other, as it happens, is to identify with victims, which is where we get a lot of therapists and social workers.) I do love the narcissism of the "they hate God" answer, as though nothing can be unrelated to their religion.

I've been asking people for years. If it's a choice, have you ever tried to be gay?
They tell me it's not the point. I disagree.
Good on 'er!

I've met people who have experimented with being gay, but they've never ended up in a LTR.

To be honest I used to be a bigoted little bitch when it came to homosexuals. Until a friend of mine got AIDs. He was so far in the closet when he told me my first response was "I didn't know you had a drug habit".
Anyway, I remember in 1985 or so reading that by the year 2000 we would all know at least two people who had died of AIDS. I called bullshit then, but when 2000 came, it was true (for me anyway).
