If you plan to register to vote, register as an independent, research the candidates or ballot items at hand, and vote by your conscience/interests. Party membership, from the voter side, mostly just allows you to vote in the party primary. Your best bet for a candidate that can win will likely be a Democrat. Sad but true.

Although, registering without a party is what registering as an independent is, so it's probably socialism too.
