www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/6365320.htmlThis is a bit of a sore topic for people in my family, even though I'm about as white as you can get. When both branches of my family immigrated, they all took different names against their will. People in my family had very Lithuanian surnames. They all changed their surnames to things that would be more "acceptable" for Americans at the urging of the immigration officials. If it hadn't been for that, I would have my original name instead of the Americanized version. On behalf of sane Americans everywhere, I apologize to the Asian-American community.

Does Texas enjoy being the butt of jokes?
What would be an "American" name? Crazy Horse? Geromino? Because if they're talking about Bush or Smith, those are Anglo names, not American.
My father had to do a legal name change to get our last name spelled right, and he's Swedish.
Then again, I've always wondered why Hubby's Asian-Canadian, and I'm just Canadian. He's 3rd Generation Canadian, I'm only second, and his family showed up here about 15 years before mine did.

Even worse: www.rr-bb.com/showthread.php?t=88408 Hey, dillweed on RR! What about Anya Zakyte (technically that's what her name was, but the records said something different)? You got a problem with my great-grandmother's name? Bobute Anya was born in America! Yeesh, that thread pissed me off.

Fuck 'em. As an aside, I most definitely do not have a common American last name. As in, if somebody has that last name, I can be very sure we're closely related.

Does it occur to people like this that "Brown" or "Jones" might be a challenge for FOB Asians, too? No, no it doesn't. That would involve thinking about furriners as human beings.
My last name *was* Anglo and easy for that idiot politician to pronounce, but I got hitched to a Russian, and we took the same hyphenated last name. My name now says before I do that I am a redneck woman who married a Russian. I like that in America, we have such a variety of ethnic groups and names. I don't like having idiotic, bigoted politicians who play to "real Amurrkans"' fears around, though.

That idiot needs to take a look at his own state.
Half the state has Hispanic last names, and down where I lived for a while, Czech and German names (equally unpronounceable) were equally common and unpronounceable.
@ the RR thread - there was more rational (and vigorous) defense of keeping original names than I was expecting. But I suspect a troll (maybe even two) in that thread.

That happened to my family too - when 2 of my paternal great-grandparents came over from Poland, their last name was changed from Cackowski to Senski. My grandma's legal name was Senski for a few years until they got it changed.
I'm not altogether surprised this goes on though, after all the fail I've seen on the mainpage from politicians...

I have a Polish last name that contains more z's than vowels. I think that's kind of awesome.
Also, what's so hard about Asian names, especially Japanese ones? Japanese is frikkin' phonetic, so it's technically easier to pronounce than English.

Ethnic names offer one of the few remaining delights of living here. If I can't pronounce one, I ask.
