I read about this. You have to be a whole new brand of asshole to pull this off and think you're justified in doing it.

While prank calling like this is stupid and immature, I have to ask without derailing the thread to much, did anyone else read Mr. Mackay as Mr. Mackey from South Park?

My brother-in-law is in Afghanistan and you know how many people in my family would be out for blood if someone prank called my sister saying my BIL had been killed overseas?

Let's think about this logically. Just being out for his blood would be wasteful. You have to make use of his whole body.

I was thinking more of the lines of pack your freezer with his remains so you can cut down on your meat bill and use his scream of agony as your cell-phone's ringtone, but that works too.

Wow. My best friend's boyfriend is in the Navy. While he's obviously away from the front lines, she never the less worries about him when he's on deployment.
I say that, when they find this guy, he gets sentenced to basic. Just going through training with a unit destined for combat action overseas. Spending all day, every day with them. Getting close to them, to know them, to be friends with them. Then, he can just go live his life. Live his life with the knowledge that those men he got got close to, that he spent everyday with, whose stories he got to know all could die at any moment from a roadside bomb or terrorist's bullet. Then, just maybe, he'll understand how much of a super duper asshole he was.

I certainly hope Canada's (or the U.S.'s) military does not break such news over the telephone. Doesn't an officer visit the residence in person, or is that just in movies?

The article states that the usual procedure is to have someone appear in person. However, having your loved one away then getting a phone call would still be believable and jarring. They gave up on using mail for it after the fiasco of trying to use it during the Vietnam war.

What a lovely day for humanity. *breaks out shotgun* I don't really know how to use this, but I'm sure this guy can help me practice.

My first year in college something similar to this happened. There was some girl who called her fellow students, posing as a nurse, and claiming that their parents had died. She somehow got enough information about some people to pull this off. She got busted when her roommate overheard her making one of these calls. I don't think there were criminal charges pressed, the behavior was seen as a result of mental illness.
