A bill to legalize marriage irrespective of gender has been introduced in the Rhode Island House of Representatives. The bill's sponsor has 27 co-sponsors, making 28 confirmed supporters for the bill. There are 75 total members: 65 Democrats and 10 Republicans. The Speaker of the House is openly gay and will bring the bill to a vote. A similar bill will be introduced in the Senate. The Senate President is opposed to allowing gay couples to marry, but has promised to not impede a vote on the legislation. The Senate has 29 Democrats, 8 Republicans, and 1 Independent. The Governor, an independent, has promised to sign the legislation if passed. If you are a Rhode Island citizen, please contact your state representative and senator in the General Assembly urging their support! You may find their contact information here: sos.ri.gov/vic/

First prostitution, now this! Rather ironic, that the state with a capital city named Providence should be the one well on its way to becoming the Nevada of the eastern U.S. (well, in what passes for the minds of fundies, anyway).

Rhode (not "Road") Island recently criminalized indoor prostitution. Ah I miss the late-night "escort service" ads on TV.

Hmm, I see. I stand partially corrected, then.

The nice thing about this, other than the obvious local benefits, is those of us in other states can now write our representatives and say "Dude, we're getting shown up by Rhode Island. Rhode Island."

And what is that supposed to mean? Hmm? :-P I'd get in my car, drive to your house and slap you, but seeing as you live outside the state, this would mean at least a 30-minute car drive and I'm just not in the mood for a road trip right now.

From sometime in the 1970s through 2010, indoor prostitution was legal. You couldn't go out on the street and solicit clients, but if you kept it in private you weren't breaking any law. There were legal brothels in the sketchy "red-light" districts.

Good for RI for stepping up and putting the bill forward.

Good on Rhode Island. Hopefully, some of that sanity can spread Australia's way.
