I've been around to some of the anti whaling boards and seen some very nasty remarks about the Japanese. Things like; "I hope the Japanese breathe in Cesium and die" or "How's it feel to be in the whale's place"
I mean, people need to grow up.

"why would i donate to japans relief. they are a 1st world country i think they can handle it." I don't think that's so unreasonable. From an ethical standpoint, the Japanese aren't suffering a whole lot more than the average Bangladeshi- and the Japanese have the independent means to (ultimately) end that suffering, which the Bangladeshis do not.

Followed by a tsunami. I think they kinda need the help right now!

Donating to Japanese relief also helps the rest of the Pacific who are affected by the water damage.

I remember in Hawaii we had so many sirens for so many things. Sharks, tsunami, hurricane, etc., We had a plan. Go to high ground. But do you think that an emergency preparedness kit would allow you to have all the clean water you possibly would need? Food? Blankets? Heaven forbid we have blankets because some pricks think that the only people you're helping by donating to the Red Cross etc., are the Japanese. That they had it coming, etc.,

From an ethical standpoint, the Japanese aren't suffering a whole lot more than the average Bangladeshi- and the Japanese have the independent means to (ultimately) end that suffering, which the Bangladeshis do not. Do you have a conscience? Six million children died of poverty last year. A little over 17 times as many children died of poverty on the day of the earthquake than the tsunami on the day it happened. The death toll for the tsunami is now near-zero- but 17,000 children will die again tomorrow, and the next day and the next. The near-zero death toll people will recieve lavish aid, the children zero. So, my question is- do you have a conscience? Edit: now, I'm not saying that the Japanese should just be left to it; clearly there is a reasonable case for sending even a lot of aid- particularly specialist nuclear scientists and rescue workers and the like. Aid budgets should be massively increased in all western countries, funding by increased taxation. But, nevertheless, it's not stupid to suggest that 99% of all aid money should go to dealing with the long-term and far more serious concerns of poverty. After all, first world countries can mostly deal with their own problems- which the Third is manifestly incapable of doing.

Where simple things like blankets and food that were destroyed by the earthquake and flooding are "lavish aid".
