TLDR: PP in Canada has been waiting for two years to find out if it will get a funding grant from the government. Yesterday, the Libs obtained a recording of a Conservative candidate who, while discussing an anti-abortion petition, told supporters that the Cons were planning on defunding PP. The Cons are denying that any such plan exists, but one can't help being suspicious about this.
Now, it's not certain that any such plan exists. This guy could have just been telling his supporters what they wanted to hear. Still, these are exactly the kinds of things that make it difficult for me to trust the Conservative party. There's only so many times I can give them the benefit of the doubt.
Seriously, what is with the sudden surge in anti-woman controversies this year?
OTTAWA – A recording obtained by the Liberal Party confirms the Harper Conservatives’ plan to defund Planned Parenthood and turn back the clock on women’s rights, Liberals charged today.
“Mr. Harper’s actions speak louder than his weak denials that he supports women’s right to choose,” said Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff. “After leaving Planned Parenthood’s funding in limbo for nearly two years – and with Conservative candidate Brad Trost’s admission yesterday – there can be no question of Mr. Harper’s true intentions.

Conservative candidate for Saskatoon-Humboldt Brad Trost, in a recording of a speech to Saskatchewan’s Pro-Life Association, thanked its members for their role in defunding Planned Parenthood, and called on them to remain vigilant. Planned Parenthood has been waiting almost two years for approval of an $18-million grant without explanation – effectively leaving them cutting them off.

After thanking those who signed petitions to defund the International Planned Parenthood Federation, a group that provides assistance with birth control and maternal health, he told the audience how his office had spearheaded the campaign and how other MPs had helped him.
“Let me tell you, and I cannot tell you specifically how we used it but those petitions were very, very useful and they were part of what we used to defund Planned Parenthood, because it has been an absolute disgrace that this organization and several others like it have been receiving one penny of Canadian taxpayers’ dollars,” he said in a recording of the speech released to the media by the Liberal Party.

No decision has been announced. But in his speech, Mr. Trost suggested that the government had stopped funding the group.
“Now, you should know, they’re still trying to get their snout back in the public trough so that they can go do it,” he said. “And so there’s going to be a lot of vigilance and pressure and if you and your groups hear anything, please help us as Members of Parliament because we’re going to be on the lookout as they try to get in there.”

A spokesman for Conservative Party Leader Stephen Harper said the government had not made such a decision about funding Planned Parenthood and that it had no desire to decide who to fund based on abortion issues.
