I don't...it scares me that people believe this stuff. And more-so that they're trying to fight to keep it in the government. Levi(one of the kids) was watching propaganda and then talking with his mom about global warming. Here's how it went(my comments in italics): Mom: "The earth is having warmer and warmer summers, so global warming is true. What's wrong with this statement?" alright, fair question. The kid is 10, so a basic logic lesson is good. Warmer summers alone don't mean anything without more evidence to back it upLevi: "The temperature is only going up 0.6 degrees, so it's not a big deal." At this point, i was confused. He didn't answer the question, and that's still a decent sized change(I'm assuming degrees Fahrenheit, as no units are given and this is the US, feel free to correct me on this).Mom: "But it's a big political issue, and it's wrong. Like what would you do if you went to a school where they said creation was stupid, and you were stupid for believing it?" etc, etc. don't feel like typing the rest, but...I don't...why is this allowed? Free speech and all, but...*headdesk*edit: if this is the wrong place, I apologize. I'm not quite sure where this fits. edit2: fstdt.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=rp&action=display&thread=8604 that's the video series Levi was watching, not sure if it's the same one or not.

I think this technically belongs in Religion and Philosophy board, if global warming is the topic...
But non the less; the best this I could say is that, we all have the right to free speech, but the problem is that this also gives us the right to say things that may be wrong. Though, when it comes to important information like science and health/biology, I think there should be a line drawn on what to say on such subjects...but that's just me.

I think everyone here has seen and been sufficiently horrified by the monstrosity that is Jesus Camp.
I think the only good to have come from that documovie was that a) it exposed the dangerous fundamentalist upbringing children in some areas are exposed to, and b) the camp (ludicrously named 'Kids On Fire', a bad name for any organization to be sure) was shut down indefinitely due to the overwhelming negative backlash they received following the release.
What I really want to see is a follow-up documentary on some of the kids to see how they're growing up. They were all between he ages of eight and twelve when 'Jesus Camp' was shot, and that was *quick looks it up* in 2006. So, five or six years ago depending on when the kids were actually filmed. They're all much older now, I would be immensely interested to find out what's going on and how--or if--they've changed since then. (Shortly after I saw it the first time, a year or so after it was released, I predicted that a few years down the line some of those girls would probably be pregnant, and that boy Levi would probably have had some legal trouble.)

It was one of the few documentaries so un-nice, I had to see it twice >>.
Actually... the second time was because I had to share it with someone who hadn't seen it - who proceeded to make us pause every 30 seconds or so so he could mock every single thing they said with brilliant one-liners. That was a great afternoon. ---------- Kids on Fire was shut down? Glad to hear it - yeah I'd love to see a follow-up. I'm sorry that they couldn't be saved, quite a few of them seemed like genuinely sweet kids.. even Levi, just terribly brainwashed. He was all "touched by an evangelist" though so it's probably way too late for him even if it was Mr. I-was-just-giving-the-male-prostitute-some-money.
I hate that when things like this come out CPS and such can't just go "Umm... Free Speech and all but... you're brainwashing your kids with lies that go against science - your kids are no longer yours." I know, I know, that sounds terrible but my Psychologist-ness screams when I see parents fucking kids up and not being able to stop them. It makes me want to scream for some kind of Liberalized.... I don't know what, that would force them to stop. But then I remember if we do it to them, they'll do it right back - so I'm terribly conflicted.

I still remember one part where the preacher lady asks for a show of hands when inquiring about "Who loves Jesus?" or something like that, and one mother in the crowd grabs her kids' hands and forces them to go up. Later, a bunch of kids in the audience are driven to tears because crazy preacher lady made them feel guilty for not being devote enough. I felt horrible for the kids, and wanted to punch that woman in the tit.

I've watched it several times, but only about twice after Ted Haggard's outing...his scene makes me giggle deliriously every fucking time now.
The part that really got me was the crazy guy coaxing the kids to wear red tape over their mouths to protest abortion. I mean, Becky's insanity and conviction that they should do as the 'Muslims' do (Muslim terrorists, that is) was bad enough, and her rant against Harry Potter was mixed terrifying and hilarious, but that guy gave off serious pedo vibes and used children at a protest. That's just...no.

Yes, the camp was shut down indefinitely and that Becky woman is no longer (I don't think) active in her church or dealing with kids. Or at least she wasn't for a while after 'Jesus Camp' was released. The camp is still shut down, though, so yay for small victories. There was a discussion briefly in some totally unrelated thread about how raising kids in strict fundamentalist households should be seen as child abuse. A few former-fundie members here chimed in, too. In the end those of us talking agreed that it was extremely emotionally and verbally abusive (if not actively physically), just with 'god' instead of 'FUCK YOU'. It really is a shame that extreme religiosity isn't seen as a danger to kids when it clearly is.

I tried to watch that. I really did. I had to stop not very long into it. I think I spent more time vomiting than watching the movie.
I haven't been able to stomach the idea of trying again.

I watched the entire thing. Funny how the sanest person on there was the Christian talk show host.

Ah yes, it's one of my favorite horror movies. In fact, I own it. Another good documentary is Fall From Grace about the Westboro Baptist Church.

Ah, yes...I kept forgetting that part. My brain is trying to save me from torment... As for the Harry Potter part I'd love to go up there with a long stick, point it at a bunch of the adults and just start shrieking AVADA KEDAVRA just... over and over and over again. Then go "If my witchcraft worked, you ought to all be dead! Either you must die, RIGHT NOW, or witchcraft is false"
