That seems like a perfectly rational response.

What the fuck?! Why am I so angry at this? It isn't surprising at all and yet I'm totally fuming from the ears. He'll be fucking better off without them. A parent who would choose to behave this way does not deserve their child.

His brother and sister have both been very supportive. Apparently, he's going to live with his brother in Texas, near the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Hemant Mehta, of the blog, "Friendly Atheist" Has raised over $10,000 for his scholarship fund. And that's not including the $1,000 he received from the FFRF. The FFRF scholarship alone is more than anyone else in his graduating class received.
Mitzi Quinn, the teacher who badmouthed him to the press, was given an award at the graduation ceremony for her "great service."

Lets see: - Sent the kid deaththreats...
- Made prayer that's not to much "Thank you God", but more of a "Up yours, atheists!"...
- Lied about not making the prayer...
- Kicked him out onto the streets...
I can't wait for an ass hat to rip up his diploma, say his future has nothing but fires of hell, and beat him to near-death with a bible. Man, what a shitty way to leave high school, all because people need to be reminded their religion doesn't give them special privileges. And these assholes feel all the poor guys been through is "justice," and he deserved it for trying to "separate" them from their God.

I must have missed that part. What did she say? And how did they justify the "service"?

She said:
It may be worth noting that the teacher saying this is a senior adviser.

I seriously can't find this statement in any of the links. I even re-watched the video. O.o
All the same, this is some Weapons Grade Assholery here. And as contribution goes...well, apparently his classmates are a bunch of assholes, & I'd consider defending civil liberties to be a lot more of a contribution than I ever made to my high school, but I guess she just has higher standards than I do.

That rises beyond Weapons Grade Assholery to... I'm not sure, but it's, like, worse than Weapons Grade.

Oh, I bet they had problems with the prayer, they probably didn't have the courage to say so.

Their family values only apply if everyone is a Christian. It's taught (and practiced by the more fundie circles) that you need to love and put God before everything, including your own children. For these people, if it were a case of choosing their religion or their children, they'd choose religion. For example, when a woman who left the Quiverfull movement (and later created a major anti-Quiverfull website) was interviewed and told that she no longer puts God before her children because that's what made her life into a living hell, she was lambasted by commenters telling her that she was wrong, that she she should never put her children before God, and that she was a selfish bitch for blaming God for her problems. Back to this story, part of me wonders if this was less a matter of faith and more a matter of "dishonor." I don't see why they felt the need to up and leave their own house, so maybe it had more to do with them feeling humiliated by the entire town because of their son and not necessarily hating for the sole fact that he's an atheist. Not that this is any excuse for doing what they did, mind you.
