Their family values only apply if everyone is a Christian. It's taught (and practiced by the more fundie circles) that you need to love and put God before everything, including your own children. For these people, if it were a case of choosing their religion or their children, they'd choose religion. For example, when a woman who left the Quiverfull movement (and later created a major anti-Quiverfull website) was interviewed and told that she no longer puts God before her children because that's what made her life into a living hell, she was lambasted by commenters telling her that she was wrong, that she she should never put her children before God, and that she was a selfish bitch for blaming God for her problems. They're such fucking hypocrits. What more is there to be said? Cultures of honor have long fascinated me. I think you may have hit the nail on the head here.

I just went to the Friendly Atheist website and kicked in $10.99 to Damon's college fund. Not as much as I'd have liked, but still something I can feel good about.

I did notice that the prayer was called for and lead by a student and not a member of the faculty.

It says a lot about your religion when it encourages you to be stupid and ignorant so you can follow it better.
Also, how much do you want to bet that once grandchildren enter the picture, she'll suddenly start poking around looking for "reconciliation?"

I'll put a million bucks for her seeking 'reconciliation' upon the arrival of grandbabies. Even my roommate's mom has made tenuous attempts at reconciling with her queer, 'rebellious' oldest daughter now that a baby's in the picture.

Because Babies Make Everything Better... *disgusted sigh* Mmyeah...did I mention this is the queer, 'rebellious' daughter who was molested at 7 years old, showed obvious signs of molestation for years, but was constantly put down and ignored by her mother and accused of being a racist little fucker (because she didn't like that my roommate's (black) father was banging my roommate's (white) mom, since you know for her sex = being hurt)? And their mom still insists she's the problem in the relationship, despite continuing to treat both her and my roommate like crap, whereas the daughter's basically like "Yeah, no, you're not gonna treat me like shit when I've done nothing to deserve it" and keeps her baby far, far away from psycho bitch momma. There are WAY too many women who should never, ever breed.

Her speech was endorsed by the school. She had originally been selected by the administration to give the opening invocation, and she was speaking on behalf of the entire school. Nevertheless, they had a chance to put a stop to the prayer after the practice recital, but they didn't, which makes them liable for the student's actions at the actual graduation ceremony. They implicitly condoned the prayer by refusing to take measures to keep it from happening the second time second time, when they had every reason to expect she would do it again. Student-led prayers at public school functions are illegal anyway.

Interesting, I'd heard that they were legal. It's a fairly recent change, but still.
I'm not sure how to feel about that.
