So, due to a series of frustrating and uncontrollable events, I've been searching Couchsurfing.com a lot this past week. I've noticed they have groups/pages/what-have-you on other sites, like Facebook and Fetlife.
So I was wondering: what would the practicality of a couchsurfing thread be, here on FSTDT? I know we don't have many members, and I'm sure quite a few of us don't have the means to house guests for long (or any) periods of time, but perhaps it could have some merit? I mean, those of us that can host could be great for cutting the costs of those of us wanting to travel for meetups & such. Guests could work out "payment" in advance (like work-trade, food, skills or entertainment). Plus, it's a sort of humanitarian effort we could all help with.
Regardless of what you guys think, I know that once I have a couple of paychecks & the new apartment I've been looking at, I'd be more than willing to offer some of you nutters temporary room & board in exchange for non-monetary exchange.
So... comments? Questions? Criticisms?

I think its a good idea... so long as it doesn't lead to homicides when people who... disagree... end up on each others' couches.

Well, I mean, it's always a good idea to have ground rules when hosting. "No smoking," "no drugs," "no preaching," whatever floats your boat/sinks your sub/motivates your metaphor.

I'd be game. I have a pretty comfy couch, and am conveniently sited near to a major city (Seattle) that people could conceivably visit.

As I am looking to move into a new place, as soon as I have one, and then a couch in it I'd offer it for this who'd need. Great idea.

I don't live near a major city, unless you consider an hour or so from Charlotte 'close' and 'major'. I do have (or rather, my roommate has) a comfy love seat, couch, and I have two stuffed chairs...and a wooden rocker, if that rows your boat. Also two 'old' game systems, a handicap-equipped bathroom, and Netflix. Just bring some fruity drinks (beer is disgusting) and sandwich stuff, and we'll be good to go. 8)

Guinness for me, please, and leave the pitcher. ;D

I live in student accommodation, meaning the only furniture in my room is a desk and a bed (and the bed's so narrow it probably qualifies as a plank). If anyone would be willing to sleep on the desk or floor, then they're welcome to stay as long as they don't get on my nerves. That said though, I think I'm the only regular here who lives in Sydney so the demand probably isn't even there in the first place.

So many volunteers already! You guys are awesome. As soon as I have a stable place (crossing my fingers for 2-4 weeks tops), I'll offer space to anyone in or visiting the NYC area.

I live near the South Florida megapolis, and once I have a place of my own...why not?
And Rat, don't dis the fruity drinks. They can be just as refreshing on a hot day.

I will not allow smoking in my house. Nor will I allow people to bring any non-essential drugs in the house (That means no pot, etc.,). Prescription meds are fine and dandy. Nor will I clean up after people and I insist people take an inventory of what they've ingested so I can refill. I don't keep a steady supply of beer so you'll have to bring your own.
Other than that I'm going to have a spare room in the new house with a media room (big screen tv, blu-ray player, etc.,)
I live 3 hours from Atlanta, and just across the river from South Carolina. Home of the Masters Golf Tournament, Augusta.

I still want to try honey mead, though, maybe it'll taste good...oh, and like Shane said, no smoking. Sorry, guys, but it's forbidden by the landlord and I'm severely allergic to it anyway.
