Hi everyone,
I had an idea. To expand the audience of the site, do you think it would be a good idea to have bilingual speakers translate some of the quotes into other languages? That way, people of other countries can enjoy the crazy just as much as we do. Also, people who are good at English and another language can translate foreign quotes into English, thus increasing the breadth of quotes that come to the site.
I think this would be implemented not as a widespread basis, but for individual quotes, starting with the most Fundie. There would be a little button at the bottom of the main quote page, maybe right under the WTF?/meh buttons, which would list the other languages the quote has been translated into.

The only issue I can see with that is that the translator may have a bias that affects the way non-literal phrases are interpreted. Otherwise, yeah, good idea

Hmm...I think the best way to do that, with minimum added overhead, would be to pass it thru a translator service like Google Translate depending on the quote's native language and the target language. Additional quotes translated by hand, while potentially more accurate, would mean more server load and less storage capacity for unique quotes.

Additional quotes translated by hand, while potentially more accurate, would mean more server load and less storage capacity for unique quotes. Machine translations aren't too accurate, so in that case, the translations would need to be looked over and corrected by a native speaker. My biggest worry with this is that we'd have no way of knowing the accuracy of the translations.

Aye, but that'd require a local copy of each translation on our server, which was my main concern. It'd mean increased server load, which would quite likely mean costing Distind more to keep it going.

Maybe it'd be best to start a separate website which mirrors FSTDT's format but is in Spanish. That way you could have a section translating English FSTDT's 'greatest hits' while also including quotes from Spanish-speaking fundies.

I know that there's been thoughts of completely revamping FSTDT with a tag system instead of a category system. This seems like a better idea in that it would save space, but how would we make it popular?

Everyone understands English if you use boldface caps throughout.

I don't think an online translation would be that bad, & it could be touched up for grammar.
Of course, Fundies aren't exactly good at speaking, so it's difficult to know whether or not they were that fucked up to begin with.

Of course, Fundies aren't exactly good at speaking, so it's difficult to know whether or not they were that fucked up to begin with. I think the only problems might happen when someone uses a "nickname" that relies on a pun or a certain word, such as how a lot of RSTDT say "Obummer", "Ofucker", etc. I just don't see how that could be translated. And if it were left untranslated, then other people would be confused.

Words that don't translate wouldn't translate. Then you could conceivably search up the term & put a footnote on the quote.

Words that don't translate wouldn't translate. Then you could conceivably search up the term & put a footnote on the quote. I guess that would work. Also, another downside is that some homophones (know/now, to/too/two, there/they're/their) can't be translated into the target language for maximum lulz, so we'll just have to correct the quotes for grammar before translating. Somehow, I think it would make the quotes of sheer stupid more popular than the quotes of sheer ungrammaticalness.

I've already been doing that for fun; running the quotes through Google Translate into German, so that they sound Nazi-ish. Most of the time I do have to make substantial grammatical corrections first. (Yeah, I know it's Godwinning, but still...)
