www.cbc.ca/strombo/social-issues/rick-mercers-powerful-new-rant.htmlI have loved watching Rick Mercer for years, and this just makes me love him so much more. He is gay himself and a political humorist, and I applaud this unusally serious Rant of his. This is a Canadian rant, but I can only hope that more people can help spread this message in other countries.

That is pretty powerful. He makes a good point, but unfortunately also forgets that if anyone in the adult world wants to get anywhere in their professional lives, they have to remain invisible, especially in countries like America. Coming out as gay is one of the fastest ways to destroy ones career, it shouldn't be, but unfortunately it is.

We have laws against firing or discriminating against people because of their sexual orientation. I do agree with you though, that it is much more difficult in the United States and many other places.

That man is amazing and awesome and I want to shower him with sprinkles. You don't shower things with sprinkles unless you plan to eat it. My only conclusion is that Smurfetteprinciple is secretly a cannibal.

We have laws against firing or discriminating against people because of their sexual orientation. That doesn't mean it won't happen. Your boss can easily promote other people over you based on sexuality and you have fuck all chance of even being certain about it yourself, much less proving it to the relevant legal body.

I like to hope that people who say, “It gets better” really mean, “It will get better because I am doing all I can to make it better.” But, yeah, I can see how saying, “It gets better,” and little else can promote folks into being lazy, un-conscientious pricks. It’s a bit like how it took me years before I realized that the saying, “God helps those who help themselves” may have once been a proper attempt to get people off their asses and work to accomplish something rather than just praying and expecting God to take care of everything. As opposed to it simply being used to justify wanton neglect of those in need of aid, which is how it is most often used nowadays.

Great video--it's really sparked some good conversations with friends about what obligation gay public figures have to make their sexuality known. I used to be of the belief that no one's orientation mattered and there was no reason to state it publicly. Now, I'm not so sure.
