Legality in a, well, legal sense =/= forum rules, and vice versa. It's considered impolite (at best) not to cite in some way what you're quoting. Notice how, when someone begins a thread with a quote from an article but no link, people immediately ask for a citation or link? Same idea. Not sure where that's dictated in the Official Rules though. Perhaps an interpretation of ?

*groans* What a painful read. Are we really supposed to believe that the new batch of science-approved gender stereotypes is any more valid than the previous one, and the one before that? The part about mathematical abilities is the worst offender, and not just because it is based on the "comparative size of brain areas" (aka modern phrenology). Girls are only worse at maths than boys in countries where it is "common knowledge" that girls are on average worse at maths. This isn't just bullshit, it is harmful bullshit. I'm not sure if it's even science approved: Those test fail to account the influence of culture and society in forming gender stereotypes. The sociological data and anthropological data suggest that those observation made above doesn't hold through cross culturally. This. There are anatomical differences between male and female brains, but there is no significant difference in intelligence that can't be explained away by gender stereotypes. I remember taking a test once that said I have an extremely "masculine" brain, because I scored perfect scores on the "spatial intelligence" sections but abysmally low scores on the "empathic intelligence" sections. It went on to say that men are good at spatial stuff and suck at language and empathy, and that women are good at talking and bad at spatial relationships. I got a very high score on the language section too, but because I had more "male" than "female" characteristics they assumed I had a "male" brain. Why? Because my brain is apparently more stereotypically masculine - strong, silent, and with a great potential for engineering or something. Furthermore, one of the sections was about which faces were more attractive. They asked me if I preferred men or women. I am bisexual, so I thought this question was very stupid. Here it is, spelled out so easy a child could understand it: faculty.washington.edu/chudler/heshe.html
