Kind of. The names are pulled by people working in the Family History Center, who try and find out who's related to who and who wasn't baptized before they died. Or, if you have a deceased ancestor that wasn't baptized, provided you've done your genealogy work correctly, you can specifically request to be baptized for them. Or, you know, you just pull random names out of a hat or pick celebrities. Because adding people who can't object to your religion isn't dodgy at all.

I don't disagree that it's dodgy, I'm just trying to explain the process.
I really need to get my name removed from their records. . . I'm tired of them counting me as a statistic.

Not exactly. . . The living person just performs the ritual on the deceased's behalf, and it's recognized in Heavenly Father's (since they call him that instead of God) eyes. Oh wait. . . Sarcasm. . . I get it! My sister swears she heard someone say thank you while she was changing back to her clothes afterwards. Because of issues like this, they were supposed to change the rules so that you could only baptize for a direct ancestor. Seems that was only a public smoke screen though.

Remember, what happens in a Mormon temple is sacred, not secret!
Sheesh.

But many of the records are becoming secret. You can look up prominant names on the family search site, the genealogy page will come up but will be blank.

It's been about 4 - 5 years since I've been "active" as they like to say, so I haven't even heard about the change of rules. I think it makes sense, and that's the way I thought it was done before I went in.
EDIT: added the quote tag that i accidentally deleted. I'm having major fail issues lately. . .

That is even more cowardly. So they can't do it publicly, so they wanna make it secret? How about they don't do it PERIOD? Maybe then people might be willing to give the church the benefit of the doubt.
I would call bullshit on any religion that pulls this bullcrap. I see no reason to make the LDS an exception.

Skyfire, that has absolutely nothing to do with what's being talked about in this topic. Once again you're attempting to side-step the current issue by bringing up entirely unrelated ones.
But, if you want to discuss that, very well. I do think it's wrong that the girl's parents took her away against her wishes, though I believe they have the best of intentions for her. It's a common desire for loved ones to want to whisk people who have fallen under the sway of cults away from the problem and to get them help.
Now please stick to the topic at hand, Or admit that the practice of baptizing dead people, even direct relatives, is abhorrent in the extreme and GTFO.

Why would anyone notice, Sky? It's a local story. It appears on 2 Mormon News sites, and the Salt Like Tribune. It also, as was mentioned has nothing to do with this story - we're not going to discuss it here, you're so offended, start a new thread. Now back to the topic of the LDS raping sou... er, sorry baptizing the dead. I was thinking about it, the majority here aren't people who believe in a soul, so it's offensive to us on the level of disrespect for the dead - but, I can't help but imagine how offensive it has to be to those who do believe in an afterlife.

All of them because, NOBODY CARES YOU DIPPY! Honestly....how is that not a blatent disregard to the don't be a dick rule I have no clue. The fact that you can't seem to answer this oh so simple question truely and compleatly disgusts me to a point I don't even care anymore. Ironbite-you and your cult deserve whatever shit you get. You brought it on yourself.

Believe it or not, few people give a shit about your pathetic little cult until they rattle their sabers by doing something like this. Nobody's covering the kidnapping because it's a local deal. You can try and bitch all you want about how it's unfair or whatever, but the amount of stuff that happens, good or bad, in Mormonland, does not make the news. Now, unless you think that one Mormon girl being kidnapped makes up for pissing on people's graves, shut up and deal with the topic at hand. Defiling the dead.

When you piss on the graves of the dead by necro dunking them, don't be surprised if people are upset about that.

Most of us do not regularly read the Mormon Times.
