We have 6 states and a handful of territories on a land mass the size of the US. We all think you're nuts. You guys have a nearly nonexistent population density. Most Australians actually live in urban areas along the East Coast. It's not the image of the country you see in tourist advertising but who the fuck are you gonna get from the US or Europe to come here if we let on that your typical Aussie lives in the suburbs and shops in the local mall? Oh yeah, I see it's the Repubs that are pushing for it. Probably got something to do with big cities full of brown people, gays and nasty foreign food with spices in it!

Come on... aren't Aussies supposed to get into fights all the time? I demand that you conform to the stereotype... I noticed that you said " We all think you're nuts." I'm sorry, but what do the non-Illinoians have to do with this? I too think this forcing Chicago out of Illinois idea is nuts. And why would less states be better? I have noticed that you people stop at nothing to make yourselves seem better than us when you plainly are not. Australia has their version of the Tea Party, ergo, you lose the moral high ground, good sir!

It's not the image of the country you see in tourist advertising but who the fuck are you gonna get from the US or Europe to come here if we let on that your typical Aussie lives in the suburbs and shops in the local mall? I actually am aware of this, but because of this your states can be larger than ours and still hold a reasonable population. For example, I live in Minnesota, which is not a heavily populated state (pretty close to the median, actually). Our total population is as high as Victoria and only 2 million less than New South Wales. There are twenty states with more people in them than Minnesota and we're as populated as your populous states. If I compared you to Florida, I'd have a state with than twice the population of your most populous state. Or I could compare Australia to California, where one state in the US has more people than your entire country. That's why you guys having a small population density matters. Australia has some populated areas, but we're like that everywhere. ETA: Numbers are from the wikipedia pages on the various regions.

This is probably where the term "outback" comes from, there are the lush populated regions along the coasts and rivers and the big rocky sandy bit "out back"!
But, yeah. I'm aware that the US has a much, much higher population density than Australia.

I'm aware that the US has a much, much higher population density than Australia. Which is why I'm saying it makes sense for us to have more states than you.
