We have artists on this board, so I figured this would be a good place to ask.
I was looking at some art I was thinking of buying and they have three options
- Original oil (very expensive) - Artists proof - Print
My question is what is an artists proof? What is the difference between that and a print?

Don't quote me on this, but I think an artist proof is a very limited print run done before the main print run. Its purpose is for the artist to check the print quality, colors, etc. But I imagine those released for sale are very collectable.

Normally, proofs are signed and numbered as well.
I used to have an artist proof of a concert poster for The Urinals signed and numbered by Coop

So is spending the extra for an artists proof worth it?
I can't afford the original oil as that's $3,000

IMHO, the extra money for the artist proof would be worth it if you are interested in the collectability aspect of it. If you just want the art for the imagery, get the print.
