The report on abuse in church-run children's homes in Ireland came out yesterday, apparently implicating the entire Catholic heirarchy in the country.

Ahhh....
We went through that a while back, not just Catholics and we're still reeling over it.

ZOMG THEY SHOULD BE CASTRATED, SET ON FIRE, AND HAVE ALL THE BONES IN THEIR BODY BROKEN!
Happy now?

They should be utterly removed from every fragment of the state and government they continue to influence beyond their function. The church has entirely too much power in Ireland, thanks to that wanker Devalera making a horse's arse of the constitution and governance. it's long after time secular and rational Ireland kicked the fuck back.
(Please don''t mainpage me. I'm furious at the depths of despair and pain these fucking bastards have visited upon my land and it's people, a psychic scar that will pervade for generations, and freely admit the words are more in anger than rationality.)

Children consigned to the tender mercies of the State have always been pervasively and consistently abused going back to the beginning of recorded history. Recently a similar story was revealed concerning the treatment of children in Florida's youth detention system going back some 70 years.
That one I can personally attest to having experienced it as recently as 1979, it is how it always has been. Too many charges, too little supervision, no functional oversight, inadequate funding, low wage/intelligence employees, and an unfortunate tendency of those employees to take out their frustration on their charges.
The field attracts some utterly dispicable people, we used to joke about it, about how only two kinds would take the job in the first place. Those who wanted to do some good and thought of themselves as crusaders but were soon burnt out by the low wages, lack of funding, lack of interest or caring by others, and the cruelty of those they had to work with. Then there is the other kind, the kind that sought the job solely because it gave them control over others, to them the job was perfect. You really have to experience it for yourself to appreciate just how sick the system is, how thoroughly the latter type have control of everything.
I could go on about how they also gamed the system and stole from it, how they made profit by hiring us out as labor to local farmers under the guise of work training, how when the tractor-trailers of food were offloaded at the camp there were also the vans and station wagons of the employees being loaded up. About us repairing their cars, mowing their lawns, doing home improvements for them, but that would be formally accuseing them of wrongdoing.
I wouldn't want to do that now would I?

This isn't mainpageable, for what it's worth. The conflict between secularism and theocracy is a major issue facing the world, and we need as many strong and passionate voices on the pro-secularism side as we can get.

1977-1979, by 1981 I was in prison at 16 years old, but this came first.
I still "fondly" remember my days in the clutches of the north Florida rednecks at the "Boys Ranch".

Yes they are...Google "Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch" or the "San Antonio Boys Village".
To be kind the Sheriffs ranch has supposedly changed a bit after numerous exposes of their antics in the major papers down here. The boys village...ehh...they have grown...but I'm not sure if that is in a good way or not...
