Anyway, sorry for hijacking the thread, the things the kids endured in Ireland were even more horrific and worse for being under the auspices of the church. Here at least it wasn't the church doing it, just a bunch of acknowledged sadists, it has to be even worse when they combine religion with abuse.
They hated us because they were under-paid redneck hicks with no place else to go in life and who had control issues to start with. To be hated and abused by your priest and nuns who are also trying to bring you into the church has to be uterly confuseing and create despair about your future. To be in a situation where all you hear about is the church and then have them abuse you while also claiming that that is of the church has got to have some lasting effect on your outlook on life.
Fucking hypocritical assholes...sigh...and the world goes on as usual...let me know when something changes, I'd be interested in knowing.

I've been reading the Ryan Report and all the Irish news past couple days. It's been many years now since I was religious but this just makes me so ANGRY I want to raze the Catholic Church to the ground. There's no justice for the victims. The Church goes on its merry way and only cares about PR. As far as I'm concerned, it's no longer possible to attend a Catholic church and be a moral person. You're supporting what they have SYSTEMATICALLY done and are guilty by association.
(Sorry if I'm coming off too harsh. I'm not surprised by this, I knew this, it just clobbered me emotionally anyway.)

What, no "ZOMG THEY SHOULD BE [insert medieval torture method here]'D!" I'm somewhat disappointed... ZOMG THEY SHOULD BE FORCED TO USE WINDOWS ME AND INTERNET EXPLORER 4.0... FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES! (modern torture is better) EDIT: I have some serious ideas what would be a great punishment, but that would be stepping on their level. Thus let the justice system deal with them and hopefully put most of them into jail until the rapture.

The secular system was no better...
From 1973 to 1980 (age 7 to age 14) I was kept in a shithole called CPRI in London Ontario. Physical, mental, and sexual abuse was a daily fact of life in that place. We were drugged to keep us docile, and regularly raped by staff who considered us to be garbage. We were beaten and humiliated for sport, by adults who held absolute power over us. We were denied any form of hope or normalacy.
I still have nightmares and panic attacks

Stories like this make me glad I was missed by Childrens services.

To those who shared their experiences - my absolute condolences. Horrific.
To those who say that continuing to attend Catholic Church is tacitly condoning it, I totally agree.
My Irish Catholic father has sent an e-mail to all on his list (which luckily doesn't include me - I just heard about this) explaining all about why the Catholic Church is still in the right, that this was awful but the Church has done far more good than harm. Yuck. Apologetics continue.

As linked via pharyngula, and Graham Linehan's blog. I saw this guy on the night the show went out, and can honestly say I was weeping salt tears for the poor bastard.
This isn't that easy watched, but by all I hold dear, it''s powerful stuff. The palpable dignity amongst the righteous bloody fury is utterly inspiring.
One can only hope there's a few thousand more like him, and the Irish can finally get the constitution we need and deserve.

Calling the victims liars is pretty much classic tactics in this situation.

re: Comments on Secular systems &c. Totally in agreement. The problems in Ireland aren't limited to, nor caused exclusively by Catholic institutions being in charge per se. The problem is in anyone being given unchecked authority and responsibility over children. Hopefully, as time wears on, in either a religious system or secular, these fucking bastards will be weeded out before they ever get near a child.

Put some separation of church and state in there. It's awesome. I mean, we don't always do it right in America, but at least we try. Over there in the UK you guys have a state church and stuff. I don't think it has much authority, but it's the principal of the matter. Also, that guy in the video, God bless him, sounds exactly like what an Irishman ought to sound like.

We have a constitution, yes. Sadly, it was mainly written by Eamonn "Stage-Irish turbo catholic wankshaft" DeValera, and needs some pretty extensive modification. It will come, though.

Separation of Church and State is awesome. Let the bloody churches fund themselves. If they're really so great and beloved and culturally vital they won't have much of a problem finding other funding, now will they?
