Who is watching it? I will most definitely be glued to the television. Here is the official website. It includes the schedule, should you want to check that out. I love watching the Bee. I've been watching it for years now, and all I can say is it is always so intense. I'm literally on the edge of my seat, especially during the final few rounds of the finals. I have a habit of talking to the TV, and during the Bee it's more like yelling. The contestants always ask a million questions. "Are there any other pronunciations?" "May I have the word in a sentence?" "What is the country of origin?" "May I have the definition?" "Can you repeat the word?" I'm in my living room yelling, "Just spell the damn word!" And of course, when a contestant hesitates, I begin to yell the correct letters out. As if they can hear me. I feel like a smarty-pants, but the only reason I know how to spell the word is it's on the bottom of the screen. It's like I'm Alex Trebek. He's always so snooty, like he would know the answer if it wasn't right in front of him. I always have to comment on it, as well. It’s kind of what I do, I just comment on everything all of the time. During the Bee I’m always saying things like, “Well, she should have known it was a W and not a V. I mean, the country of origin is Germany.” Anyone else a fan?

Huh, that's another piece of culture that we don't have around here. It's actually pretty funny, because you just answered a question I asked myself recently.
The only time I've ever seen Spelling Bees is on American comedy shows, like the Simpsons for instance. There are always huge audiences there, so I've asked myself if people unrelated to the contestants actually watch that sort of thing. And apparently they do.
Don't get me wrong; I'm sure I could get excited by it too, it's just something that seems so very foreign to me that I have a hard time imagining it. And cultural differences are interesting to me.

I know others who watch it, but no one I know gets as weirdly excited about it as I do. Most people I know just tease me about it. What can I say? I get excited about strange things.

Well, it sure beats the heck out of NASCAR. It's like I'm Alex Trebek. He's always so snooty, like he would know the answer if it wasn't right in front of him. Actually, I understand that Trebek once took the applicant quiz for Jeopardy! contestants and scored rather respectably. Even so, I personally don't find him snooty at all; I've always thought that he came across as genuinely sympathetic to the players. ~David D.G.
