The BoxIt's a quick one-shot, and people seem to like it.

It's cute! People do seem to love flash fiction (under 1000 words; microfic is under about 300 words), and I wonder if that's a sign of the times. But it's got all the hallmarks of a good flash fic story -- especially since flash is all about making the reader do some of the plot work themselves. Good flash makes you think things that the story didn't literally say. It's all about suggestion and detail. I like the "snakes" thing at the end.

WMDKitty...story about a cat...interesting.
Anyway, yeah, it was pretty comical, in a good way.
The one thing I don't understand is the reference to "Bast." What is that?

Oh! Haha!
Wasn't she also the goddess of love, or something like that?
(If so, freaky. And I don't like dat.)

Bast, or Bastet, was considered a was goddess and the protectorate of Lower Egypt originally. Then slowly evolved into just a protectress and mother goddess (and went from a fierce lioness to a domestic cat). I have heard of her being connected with love though. The Egyptian Gods all had multiple, overlapping roles, so that was probably one of hers at some point.

I remember doing some project on Egyptian Gods way back when, & I just remember, "The cat was love. And cats." But, you know, memories aren't always accurate.

I believe she would be considered the goddess of motherly love. They had different god(dess)s for different kinds of love.

Aw, cute! And it's very well written - in such a way that you don't really even notice the writing, which I think is masterful. But I don't like the ending! I'm afraid the kitty will chew through it while it is plugged in! Also... honestly, any chance of changing the title? That title, for a short story, has STRONGLY negative associations (see the disturbing images thread for details)... but on the other hand, it's a fitting title, and it's probably just me who hears "the box" and goes "AGH AGH NO NO NO *shudders, hugs puppies and looks at pictures of kitties for a few hours and eats chocolate*".

Umm...what's this about the title being disturbing?
(I don't know where the disturbing images thread is....)

Umm...what's this about the title being disturbing? (I don't know where the disturbing images thread is....) I just had the misfortune of reading a different "short story" entitled "The Box," written by someone either pretty sick or with a pretty sick sense of humor. Since it's not funny at all, I'd go with the former.

I think about the same thing when I hear it, actually. Not to the extent of hugging puppies, but I didn't read the whole story, got bored at the beginning.
