Linkagaficationalisation....turns out that some kid designated as a reincarnated guru would actually prefer, to quote the article, "TV, football and girls" to living in a monastery. My thoughts? Good choice. Also pretty good proof that the only life you know isn't the only life you can conceive, so every fundie and atheist is always capable of switching.

I wonder what they're going to blame for this? I mean it's not their fault they take a kid from his family and force him to grow up like POW. I mean I'm a Buddhist and I find that whole idea stupid! I'm only surprised it hadn't happened before. I hope the kid's new direction (going into film) works out for him.

Wasn't there a big sect of buddhism that believed women would go to hell because they menstruated? I read that in a fairly reputable book. What I don't get is Buddhist terrorists. Why the fuck do you need to kill people? Can't you (they, the crazy people) just wait for them to reincarnate onto their side?

There may have been. People do sick things in the name of Buddha in the far east. Just like they do it in the name of Allah in the middle east, or the name of Jesus in the west. Same bullshit, different magic deity.
@ Vypernight, yeah I'm a Buddhist too, Soto Zen to be exact. There's Buddhist cults, Buddhist fundies, Buddhist rip-off artists. Hell the corruption of Japanese Buddhism in the 12th century is what sent Dogen on his search for enlightenment. So it's not something new.

But remember there's no such thing as a fundie Buddhist. Or so I keep getting told. Except for Lon Nol and the government of Myanmar and the Dalai Lama ruling class (including their 14th dictator, Tenzin Gyatso). But other than that there are no Buddhist fundies..... ;D Oh yeah, and Emperor Hirohito's Imperial Army was based on a mixture of Shintoism and Buddhism. At any rate, I can't stand Buddhism just as I can't stand any other religion.

But...... but.......
We're all peace loving hippy's in safron robes. We never do anything wrong, we never get mad, we just walk around with silly little grins on our faces.
Or so I've been told.

Hell the corruption of Japanese Buddhism in the 12th century is what sent Dogen on his search for enlightenment. So it's not something new. I think it was a Japanese sect in fact. I read about it in a book about Japanese feminism. The gist of it was that women menstruate, and that menstrual blood goes into the rivers and thus might find itself in the tea of a monk. This is somehow the women's fault, so they all get to go to Buddhist hell. It was odd.

...there's a Buddhist hell?
Ironbite-man Eastern religions are so wacky but they got some cool monsters.

...there's a Buddhist hell? Ironbite-man Eastern religions are so wacky but they got some cool monsters. Their gods have far more stuffed animal potential than that of western religions, I'll certainly give them that.

There's 6 Realms of existence. Belief in them range from literal truth (fundies) to people who believe they're just ways of explaining different mental/emotional states (me). Anyway, here goes....
God Realm Sort of a temporary heaven, it is easiest to achieve nirvana here, but things are so good, that many forget to bother.
Demi-God Realm The realm of the Jealous gods (sound familiar?) Life is easy, but while in this state, you are typically fighting and bickering with others.
Human Realm The one everyone reading this is the most familiar with. It is the realm where you can overcome adversity and reach enlightenment.
Animal Realm The realm of suffering and ignorance.
Hungry Ghost Realm suffering and greed that can never be satisfied.
The Hell Realms In between 16 and 136 different hells depending on the tradition. Although hell is temporary in Buddhism, the anguish is so great that it feels eternal.

Zen here as well, and although I think highly of Master Dogen, I don't really identify with Shoto, Rinzai, Ch'an, or any other specific sect.
As for Buddhist terrorist, there was that group in Japan (I can't remember the name but I'll try and find it) that gassed a subway because they thought they were helping to bring upon the Apocalypse. Something about the leader got a vision while meditating, and instead of realizing that it was just his mind trying to keep him focusing, he thought he had gained ultimate wisdom and could see the end of the world.
Long story short; a nut case is a nut case, no matter what path they follow.
