Gah! This thread title made me think one of our own was locked up for something! Not this time. Ah, sweet irony. I just really hate that the bastard is going to come out of this with a book deal.

To be fair, isn't he only a suspect rather than a convict? I know the quotes in that article are somewhat incriminating, but let's not go all British-tabloid on the guy and trial by intuition. They should give Roeder an extra blanket, as well as access to his CPAP. Why? Because, unlike their prisoner, they're not barbaric terrorist assholes - a fact for which that murderous prick should be grateful. As for the main point of this, the coldness thing is slightly amiss, but there's no legal obligation to a phone call or anything else he was asking for. Actually, when someone is arrested, they are allowed as many phones calls as it take in order for them to obtain legal representation. That whole 'one phone call' thing is a bullshit myth made up by cops (who are allowed to lie to you legally in an interrogation) and idiotic television crime dramas. I've always wondered about the stupidity behind the whole 'one phone call' thing. The cops tell you you are allowed to have legal representation. What, do people think if they dial the wrong number or their lawyer is on vacation they don't get another phone call?

My first stay at the pleasure of the state was the drunk tank. I used my phone call to get a large thin crust with sausage, pepperoni, and extra cheese delivered.

I had heard that it was illegal to make a profit off of your crimes - or am I just terribly misinformed?

Some states do have the so called "Son of Sam Law" where one cannot profit from their crimes. Other states, Nevada for instance, do not.
