When your down and feel like wallowing in it for a while what do you listen to? What songs have made an impact on you? Maybe I should let Elton explain...
The awesomeness of this songs placement in "Donnie Darko" is hard to describe... MAD WORLD-GARY JULES COVER:
"Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours" was a simply awesome line... WRECK OF THE EDMOND FITZGERALD:

When your down and feel like wallowing in it for a while what do you listen to? What songs have made an impact on you? When I feel like wallowing in unadulterated misery, I usually listen to SOAD's "Toxicity" album. Seriously, "Mad World" is an excellent "because I wanna feel blue" song. "Welcome To My World" is kinda meh, but still lets me wallow around for a while before seeing light.

This is more of a "sad because I got dumped" or "sad because my relationship sucks" kind of song but The Smiths "I Know Its Over". Eesh the part where he says "Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my heeeead. " Yeah, niagara falls, people.

At the Gate by Blaine Larsen. The singer is imagining who'll meet him in Heaven when he dies. I made the mistake of listening to it as I was driving home after my brother's funeral. The singer mentions his great-grandmother meeting him with a plate of fresh-baked cookies, and I pictured my grandmother meeting my brother with some banana bread, and I had to hit the power button for my car stereo, because I was about to break down sobbing on I-81... And the part where he says he hopes its not his wife or kids, because that would mean they died before him gets me choked up, too.

Rory Gallagher: A Million Miles Away. You can stick your Claptons and your SRVs up yer arse. Rory is where it's at.
There's just something in this, like all slow blues, makes the old head bob appreciatively in empathy.

"Gone Too Soon" -- Michael Jackson
"She's Out of My Life" -- Michael Jackson
"Memory" -- from "Cats"
Incidentally, these also make me cry like a little girl.

These two songs, for some reason, almost always hit me emotionally, no matter how I'm feeling before I listen to them.
