Walter Cronkite is reportedly gravely ill. CBS is not commenting. Those of us older than 35 or so will remember the days when "Uncle Walter" was the evening news, by golly. And remember the days when a reporter, of all professions, was, hands down, the most trusted man in America. As far as I'm concerned, TV News, and journalism in general, has been going downhill since CBS forced him into retirement. Incidentally, I posted this under "Entertainment and Television" because Cronkite would not have wanted his passing to be made into big news. It will be.

I really do miss ol' Walter Cronkite on the evening news, as well as his "Bicentennial Minute" historical lessons throughout 1976. The man is still venerated by proper journalists, and quite deservedly so. The problem with TV "news" is that it is no longer journalism, but infotainment, guided more by business interests than by proper journalistic interests. I'm sorry he had to see it decline like this.

There is such a slant to it one way or the other that it is difficult to watch. And you never really know if your getting the "real story" or if your just getting what they want you to get. And that goes for all of them, just not Fox News. I do wish we had a few true journalists like Walter Cronkite left.

Here is a clip of Cronkite reporting the assassination of Martin Luther King. Makes you nostalgic for real news, and for what CBS used to be.
