My aunt is...special. As in, Rapture Ready type special. She is here for a week. I made the mistake of letting her rope me into a religious discussion. I don't know which is worse--the fact that I can't encourage her to open her mind even the tiniest bit, or the fact that she is now trying to get me to "see the light" and won't shut up about it. When she turns on the TV, it's because she either wants to watch this new-agey shit about the book of Revelation (which indicates that Satan is the source of all confusion, that True Christians all interpret Rev in exactly the same way, etc.) or Faux News Network. Until mom and dad get home, that's all she'll watch. And every conversation goes back to Jesus within two sentences or less. She literally cannot think of anything disconnected from evangelizing or the "war on Christianity." She's linked me to propaganda sites: www.aclj.org/www.persecution.com/She just won't shut up about it. And she's here for a few more days. I'm tempted to come out of the broom closet to her, but she'd either: a. Cite Exodus 22:18 as a reason to condemn me repeatedly, b. Try to bring me back into the fold, thus kicking up her nonsensical rhetoric into high gear, or c. Have a heart attack.

when you say broom closet you mean you're a lesbian or an athiest?
Ironbite-cause to be honest if you are a lesbian I'll have to update my list.

My friend left some Blue Moon in my fridge. You can have it.

I have a better idea: Introduce her to the writings of a liberal evangelical Christian, Fred Clark, who has spent the last couple of years ably deconstructing ' Left Behind' sentence by sentence. Don't tell her about your own beliefs unless you want to see a years-long war waged between your aunt and your parents over "child training."

ip.xerobank.com/test.phpYou could show her that your ISP and the government are spying on you. Might at least scare her away from those websites, and maybe Fox News. Or it could just make her freak out more. I wouldn't know.

Ironbite: Since she said "broom" closet, I'm gonna venture a guess & say she's Wiccan.

Ironbite: Since she said "broom" closet, I'm gonna venture a guess & say she's Wiccan. Maybe both, though; some people get kinda freaky with broom handles. In all seriousness, I think it'd be kinda fun to mess with a hardcore fundie's head. You know, leave some "Satanic" symbols and shit in her room, when she won't know that you were the last one in there. It might just make the problem worse, though...

Sneak out at night and turn all the crucifixes in the house upside down. Should make for many lols.

From what I've read of The L, Lithp's guess is correct.

My wife surprised me yesterday. She's a member over at christianforums.com, and someone in her usual subforum was lamenting over the Christian persecution by Muslims in Xinjiang province.
I quipped that the Chinese government is cracking down on the Uighurs, who are predominantly Muslim, and I consider the way Ge-Ge is cracking down on them to be a bigger example of persecution and a violation of human rights. Especially considering the information blackout that's happening.
What surprised me? She replied that when she saw that post, I asked myself "well, what else is happening there." And she agreed.

when you say broom closet you mean you're a lesbian or an athiest? Ironbite-cause to be honest if you are a lesbian I'll have to update my list. I've been reading Pagan newsletters for so long, I keep forgetting how obscure that expression really is. Because conservatives tend to react to "Mom, Dad, I'm Wiccan" the same way they react to "Mom, Dad, I'm gay," the phrase "coming out of the broom closet" has been used to refer to the Big Reveal of one's Pagan religious identity to the folks. So yes, Lithp was right. Someone who's GBLT and Wiccan, and hiding both, is occasionally referred to as being "in both closets" for the same reason. And I'm bi, but taken. Sorry to disappoint. @marquis: OMGs I love the Slactivist! Part of me is more tempted to print out the thing about how Fred Phelps is proof positive that allowing gay marriage will not infringe on people's rights.

I had my own "coming out" experience the other day when I told my parents that I was a pacifist. It wasn't nearly as traumatic as some of yours though. Turns out they had long thought that I already was. A bit anti-climactic, actually.
