Sandman, are you implying that you see FSTDT as reserved for religious bigotry specifically?

Not really. Just that I don't think the mainpage needs to be any more fragmented than it already is. We are already dealing with a massive issue of unworthy quotes making it onto the mainpage, (It's enough of a problem that I kind of want to go back to the system we used to have when a mod had to specifically approve every quote) do we really want to open up a whole new thing? I've been paying attention to the submission for a while now, and there are an awful lot of people who seem to be taking the position that any expression of religious faith at all is automatically "fundy" and worthy of mockery. That's not being satirical, that's just being a dick.
I don't like the fact that we have a CSTDT and an RSTDT category in the first place. They both need to go because they dilute the purpose of the site. The comments on CSTDT are just plain stupid and the ones on RSTDT are just hateful.
Do we want to turn FSTDT into a semi-official pro-gay site? Establishing a special section for homophobic comments (and the ones that aren't religiously fundy have the same problem as RSTDT does, they are just hateful, and hate just isn't funny) may give the impression that that is what the site is becoming. If that's what people want, I guess I don't have a problem with it, but it's not what the site has historically been. We mock homophobics technically not because they are homophobic, but because they are using their religion to justify it. That makes them fundy. The non-fundy ones are just assholes.
I think that RSTDT and CSTDT need to be dismantled, and a concerted effort made to get the site back to what it is supposed to be: mocking fundies.
But....
Another thing to consider, perhaps the real issue in the end. Has FSTDT just run its course? I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets massive deja vu when reading through the mainpage. While the people quoted might be different, they all say pretty much the same things over and over and over and over again. It is extremely rare that I see a quote on the mainpage that says anything that hasn't been posted, mocked, and totally debunked half a dozen times over already on the site. I guess I understand why Yah just got sick of it.
Hell, even the forums have gotten predictable now: Post established...Sky makes a jackass comment in support of some asinine conservative talking point....everyone jumps on Sky....wash, rinse, repeat. YAWN.
I don't know what it will take to get some fucking life back into the place, about the only thing I do know is that You-Know-Who style flame wars are not the answer.

You and I appear to be on the same page, then. I have some plans for projects and whatnot that should breathe some life back into the site, but there are some skills I need to acquire first. In the meanwhile, everybody is just doing what they can.

I see what you mean, and have two partial explanations:
1. The site has a culture bias, i.e., it is confined to English speakers, and so for the most part only involves the usual breeds of fundamentalist Christians, racists and conspiracy theorists in the U.S. (and to a lesser extent Canada, Australia and the U.K.), with the occasional "minority" fundie; I think that most of us have become desensitised to the usual fundie rationalisations for their various beliefs, and so the mainpage quotes have lost their usual shock value. For the most part, the language barrier prevents direct access to quotes from those of other major world religions, and so instead we can only rely on news reports, etc., for those, which is really much less interesting anyways.
2. Even if we could access fundies from other lands, the bottom line is that there is almost nothing new under the sun when it comes to their type of reasoning anyways. For me, at least, they always boil down to making some sort of assumption without due justification, and it gets boring and depressing after a while.
0. There isn't any real purpose to this site except to be shocked by certain types of people. Maybe if we had some sort of grand change in scope and design, making FSTDT into some sort of project with a lasting purpose, things would heat up.

Part 0 is actually what I'm in the middle of doing. ^-^
Or trying to, anyway.
