So, I've always wanted to have a web comic of my very own. Problem is, I can't draw for shit. In fact the stick figure anti-defamation league has won a court case against me barring me from even drawing them.
That being said, I can write, half way decently I think. So I plan on making a sort of text based web comic. Now I know this idea is nothing new, but what do you guys think of these types of things? I was basically thinking about making a blog and then posting chapters in an ongoing story? Sound like something that could work if people were interested in the story?
Speaking of which, here is my idea. A few centuries into the future and mankind has explored the universe. At first this was done via the use of singularity engines which would grant the ship entry into hyperspace. Unfortunately, these engines were expensive, took experts to run them, and hyperspace itself had to be surveyed constantly by trained scientist. Thus when the quantum gates were developed it wasn't long before they became the preferred mode of space travel.
Basically, the gates were permanent wormholes that were linked to one another. This meant that ships didn't need singularity drives, no one had to constantly map hyperspace, and it was cheaper and easier for everyone. Until, "The Collapse", happened one day. Something happened and all of the gates in the system shut down. No explosions, no lights, just one minute the soft glow of the portals and then...nothing. No one is sure to this day what caused it. Many think it was some type of collision that overloaded the system, some think it was that all along the gates were ripping apart the fabric of space-time until finally it gave way. Then there were those that thought it was something else entirely, divine punishment.
When the gates crashed, things were bad. No one had any means of interstellar travel. Economies that were dependent upon the gates collapsed, even the various governments had used the gates for everything but certain warships, and since one could always find more resources on another planet, there wasn't much war, so there weren't many warships. Then one group that had bided its time saw its chance. The Church of Christ Universal was what most of the Old Earth Christian denominations had evolved into. They had forbade their adherents from using the gates saying that the ability to be somewhere instantly was reserved for God alone. Thus they were the only ones with a sizable fleet of ships with singularity engines.
They helped, and in return the only thing they asked was the exclusive copyrights to singularity engines. It was readily given. Many didn't even remember how to build them, and besides they wouldn't be needed once the gates were rebuilt. Only, the gate technology wouldn't work anymore. No matter if the gates were built anew, refurbished from old ones that had work, nothing would work.
Fast forward to the "present". Since the gates wouldn't work and the Church was the only one that had the singularity drives, they became defacto rulers. If worlds didn't conform at least outwardly to the Churches doctrine they were left without access to the rest of civilization. What's worse is that the Church makes sure that no one planet can become independent of the rest of the universe by limiting what can be produced and grown on any planet. They enforce their will with a fleet of warships no one had known they had.
A few pockets of resistance have popped up. They take great risks for if it is discovered what their home planet was, retaliation will be taken against the whole planet. Labeled as pirates, they deal in things that are outlawed by Church doctrine. Tobacco, alcohol, and most importantly, information. They call themselves the Atheist Navy and do their best to keep the old ways from dying while attempting to discover what went wrong with the gates in the hope that if they can be restored, the Church's death grip on the galaxy can be loosened.
So that's my idea. I know its all probably been done before, but I really like the idea of space opera's. Don't be shy though, if you think it's an incredibly inane idea say so! If it's something that you would read, let me that too. Ideas, comment, and criticism are always welcomed.
