I thought I might put a story of mine up here for all to see. It's called Deception as the title of this thread says. It's a short story I wrote ages ago.
Deception
Carl Wright gazed down on the ceremony from atop a rolling hill the way a Greek god would observe his creation from Olympus. The freezing winter day did not stop Sam Wright’s funeral from being outside, it was his final wish. Carl and Sam, twins that had hardly spent a day apart since they were born had now been separated in the cruellest way imaginable, death. Sam’s death proved as a shock to the Wright family. Alfred Wright, their father had been brutally murdered only two years before, a murder that was never solved. The sorrow and grief that plagued Sam’s thoughts and emotions had finally got the better of him and he took his own life, but this was only a half truth.
“Have you talked to him yet?” Carl asked, although no-one was there to hear his question.
“No, not yet” The sound of Sam’s voice echoed throughout Carl’s head.
“Can you see?” Carl asked.
Without answering Sam materialized himself next to Carl. His transparent projected body was only seen by Carl. Ever since they were five they had been able to remain in contact with each other mentally, no matter where they were. They had comfort in the knowledge that even if they were apart they could still talk to each other.
“Well, there’s and afterlife” Sam said with a sound of relief. “And it still works”
“Mums upset” Carl informed. “She’s worse than at dads funeral”
“She still has you” Sam answered. “Look after her for me”
“It was a big gamble Sam”
“But it was a gamble that payed off”
Carl knew this was true. Sam had been hit the worst by their father’s death. For the two years Sam had been longing to find out who killed their father so they could pay dearly. Carl could remember Sam’s proposal clear as day.
“Are you sure you want to take the risk?” Carl had asked.
“For two years I have been unable to smile, I can hardly sleep, it hurts to think the killer is still out there” Sam replied, he sounded tired and Carl could hear a sadness in his voice. “I need to know Car, I just can’t bare it anymore, I need to know”
Carl knew Sam would do it anyway, even without his ‘blessing’. Carl was backed into a corner. He gave in.
“When?” Carl asked.
“The end of the week, I have everything ready”
There was no stopping Sam now, at the end of that week Sam stepped into the unknown with no way of knowing if he could retain contact.
“What’s it like?” Carl asked.
“Different”
“When are you going to ask him?”
Sam turned his eyes to the ground in silence, he wanted to know more than anything, but he was scared. Scared of what the answer may be, scared of it being someone they knew, or someone that Carl could never find. But he had gone this far, he had to continue. Without another word Sam vanished.
Not it was only a matter of time before Sam knew the truth. But of course it was too late. The plan was already set into motion. After a few minutes passed Sam manifested himself again, unhappy with what he heard.
“I know who killed him”
“That makes two of us” Carls words were as cold as the winter breeze that numbed his face. Without saying another word he walked to where his mother stood crying to play the comforting son as Sam’s body was lowered into the ground. All the while ignoring his brothers desperate screams from beyond the grave.
