Basically I've downloaded AVG because it's free and actually finds viruses during scans, and I want to get rid of McAfee but I've got no idea how. There's no uninstall app and trying to delete it manually doesn't work (comes up with "file in use" message). The most I've been able to do is disable the the features such as automatic updates and whatnot, but I that's as far as I've got.
Help?

I have no useful advice, but I've been there. I had CA, but it never fully uninstalled. With some of these programs you'd be better off with the malware.

Google found this: 1. Click on the following link to download the MCPR removal tool download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe2. Click Save and save the file to your desktop 3. Close all McAfee Application windows you may have open, and double-click on MCPR.exe to start the removal tool. Windows Vista users will have to right-click on the file and select "Run as Administrator" 4. After the removal tool finishes, you should be prompted to restart your computer. 5. Once the computer restarts, your McAfee product should be uninstalled. 6. If for any reason there appears a red X during the uninstall, go to the following location for more advanced uninstall instructions involving the registry. tools.mcafeehelp.com/doc.php?siteid=1&docid=419397

McAfee is a colossal pain in the arse to get rid of, isn't it?
Especially considering most folk don't want it in the first place...

At the time I had it, it was more lightweight than Norton. But it made up for itself while having to look for updates every 10 min while I was playing games WITH EVERYTHING ON THE CHECKER TURNED OFF.
There was SiteAdvisor. It's not bulletproof, but it's pretty lightweight and I find it's a nice heads-up while I'm surfing.

You might try going into Safe Mode and uninstalling it from there. That's what I've had to do on a couple of programs that loaded files on Windows start-up. Going into Safe Mode will usually not load any other program files when it starts.

Yeah, it's tough to get rid of.
Fortunately F-Secure seems to have a built in removal tool that took care of it (or at least disabled it) enough that F-Secure could install.
But for some reason I think I had to go into safemode to do it.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll try safe mode 1st and if that fails, I'll try Mantorok's uninstall patch.
Oriet- Yeah, I tried that, same result as trying to delete the folder directly.
IIRC though I think McAfee has a "shredder" application that deletes files. I thought about ordering it to shred itself, but I was worried it might create a paradox and fuck up my whole computer or something...
