I just watched the Lovely Bones, and I was thoroughly disappointed with the last 30 minutes of the film. Highlight for spoilers: The whole "Moving on is more important than revenge" thing fell flat, based on the fact that this guy was a serial killer, and almost certainly would target more girls. The divine ice crystal death seemed like an ass pull to avoid the moral issues of not doing anything possible to make sure he got caught. The guy's death itself was supposed to be his retribution, but it too fell completely flat (no pun intended). More than anything, the ending was just poorly carried out. Maybe it was better in the book, I don't know. Oh, and how the fuck did he get that safe up the stairs and into his car, when it took him and that other guy forever and a day to roll it 20 feet to the ditch? The rest of the film was okay, but I hated the ending.

We were discussing Twilight in the IRC last night, and I was feeling a bit masochistic, so I went and watched the movie for the first time. It was terrible. Absolutely terrible. I kept having to pause the movie so I could rant to myself.
Prior to last night, I didn't have much Twilight knowledge, only enough to know that I thought the basic plot was absolutely stupid. I never really looked into it before, which is why I'm 2 years late to the Twilight raeg party.
A part of me always wanted to think that the harsh criticism aimed at this story was a bit overblown, but no. It is absolutely justified. It's total amateur MARY SUE garbage. Vapid teen angst garbage. From plot, to character development, to dialogue, it all wreaks of amateurism. That's just for the MOVIE. I read a bunch of snippets from the book as well, and I can tell it's even more insipid.
I know I'm not a really well-educated guy, and I don't have as much literary experience as I probably should, but I know enough to be angry at the success of this swill. This doesn't belong in movie theaters or on book shelves, it belongs on a teen fanfic website, lonely and forgotten.
Twilight sucks. It sucks. Suuuuuuuuuuuuucks.

The teen I aid for loves Twilight, so I've ended up watching the films with her when I'm caring for her at her house. I hate, hate, HATE this series SO much. This shit isn't even So Bad It's Good material. It's straight-up So Bad It's Horrible. I wrote better stories when I was 14. That's not an exaggeration, nor was I some kind of child prodigy -- my naive, unsophisticated 14-year-old self could produce better writing than this load of horse shit. The movies are just so bloody dull, probably because they're basically just Stephanie Meyer's fantasy about a vampire boyfriend. It's 90% Bella and Edward having relationship drama, fawning over each other, with only 10% of the movie being devoted to a half-assed plot that always ends up being 100% Bella-centric... because Bella is Meyer's god damn avatar in the story, the quintessential Mary-Sue, around whom the whole universe revolves. She manages to be a Black Hole Sue, a Purity Sue, a Jerk Sue, a Relationship Sue, and a Sympathetic Sue (the latter only being an intention on Meyer's part, as the character is wholly unsympathetic to most people). It's basically a self-insert vampire fanfic that somehow escaped from fanfiction.net and found its way onto paperback. You can get this same shit for free on millions of livejournals across the globe. And all of the other characters suck, too, by the way. Not just Bella. It's impossible to connect with any of them because they're so lifeless and detached. Edward is a Gary-Stu/God Mode Sue, the vampire family is a Thirty Sue Pileup, the bad guys are Villain Sues, etc. None of what anyone does makes any sense. I don't know how she managed it, but Meyer's own god damn characters were out-of-character 90% of the time. That takes a special degree of suck. Oh, and we're expected to see Bella's relationship with this vampire as romantic and desirable, yet the whole thing comes across as creepy, unhealthy and abusive. This is made brutally apparent when Meyer makes allusions to Romeo and Juliette, another famous couple whose romance was not healthy, nor was it meant to be, in spite of Meyer's misinterpretation of the play. The disturbing thing is that numerous teen girls are actually buying into this romantic vampire bullshit. An 80+ year old man watching a teenager sleep is NOT romantic, no matter how young and hot he looks. If the relationship had been presented as unhealthy, and Meyer had explored that angle, the book would have had the potential to be good... but that would require a capable writer who understood that characters need flaws. Incidentally, the actors in the films seem to understand characterization better than Meyer does, as Robert Pattenson apparently said that he read the book, hated Edward for being a manipulative jerkass, and decided to play the character as the lousy son-of-a-bitch that he saw him as (in addition to the comments about the story being Meyer's creepy fantasy), and the other actors have made negative comments as well. Still... teen girls are eating this shit up like candy. And another thing... why the fuck would these vampires, who are 80+ years old and immortal, spend eternity in high school? It's not like it would blow their cover if they stopped going, regardless of how old they look -- I'm 24, but look like I'm a teenager, and no one accuses me of being a vampire for not being in high school.

Mrs. Antichrist, I shit you not, when I was in Creative Writing I, two years ago, this girl there had written what was almost an EXACT carbon-copy of Twilight. The only thing that was not carbon-copied from the book was the actual prose itself, and even that I'm not entirely sure of. It followed the same damn plot (Average Girl moves to a lonely, podunk small town with her Single Dad, Average Girl goes to highschool, meets Best Friend/Second Banana, meets ~*~SUPERSPARKLYSPESCHULGUY!11!!!!*~*, falls in LUUUUUUVV). The only difference between this story and Twilight was... get this... instead of vampires... we have fairies.
Yeah, you heard me. Fairies.
It was horrible and loltastic.
I wish I still had my copy of it.
Anyway, the last movie I watched was the uncut version of Cannibal Holocaust.

I don't know how valid this information is, but I was told that the reason the vampires sparkle is because the original concept for Twilight was fairies, but the publisher made her change them to vampires, because vampires were more "in".

Saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1, twice.
Before that I watched Twilight. If the books are bad, the movie is pretty goddamn awful. Vampires just don't really do anything for me. :/

I saw the Scott Pilgrim movie a week or so ago, I thought it was good, but when it came out I didn't want to see it 'cause everyone was saying it was crap.

Whilst we're on the subject of vampires, I really need to get round to watching the original, Sir Christopher Lee, version of Dracula.

Star Wars Episode 2: The Empire Strikes Back.
I hadn't watched it years. It's pretty damn good, mainly because it was not directed by Lucas. Really fast paced, though.
