For a joke in another topic I had to check the abbreviation for these guys:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NARTH#Medical_view_of_conversion_therapy
And decided to do some quick reading while I was there.
A group that makes up at the highest estimates 5% of the population has taken complete control of every credible medical organization to push their agenda. Yeah, thats the obvious answer. Can't possibly be that they're full of shit. I could go into a whole other rant about them blurting out that civil rights is BS and they're a christian organization but I'll stick on topic.
The other major group that comes to mind doing this bullshit are the creationists, though I'm sure theirs alot more I'd find if I look into other issues. These 'research associations' all have the same format. Endlessly state your beliefs as fact, parade around afew guys with Dr. and Professor in the name to legitimize it and claim its a vast conspiracy when every single major institution in the field disagrees. They have no interest whatsoever in the actual science, they exist solely to give their supporters something scientific sounding to back up their claims, and since most people assume anyone with a degree is a trusted source *especially if they agree with them* the strategy works.
Sorry for the rant but I've seen so many people use these guys, Answers in Genesis and other idiots as sources and not see anything wrong with holding 1% of the scientific communities opinion over the other 99%. I know this is all about 'scientific' groups but I post it here because it's obvious they're nothing but political groups.

Major organizations that reject therapy to change sexual orientation include the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American Counseling Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Association of School Administrators, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Education Association.[19]
NARTH rejects these claims, arguing that the psychological and psychiatric professional associations have become little more than the research arms of the gay rights movement.[20] A. Dean Byrd commented in a press release that a paper by Jeffrey Satinover showed that, "...gay advocates have created fraudulent studies and misused, misquoted, and mischaracterized other research studies for political gain. These reports are frequently used in court cases to bring about victories for gay activism."[21]
