The people responsible for this modern medical marvel deserve as much pizza, cake, and liquor as they're willing to ingest.

This makes me want to do backflips, throw a party in their honor, and sing out loud.
However, since I cannot do backflips, lack the money to throw a party, and aren't that great a singer, I'll just shout "Hooray!"
Hooray!

How long before some douchebag says that vaccinating against HIV will only promote deviant sexual behavior?
Anyway, yay science!

This is indeed awesome... but I couldn't help but do a double take when I saw this from the main board. "This is awesome: AIDs..."

I'm not convinced it's going to work. 31% is a very small success rate. Also, it was only developed for strains in Thailand. Also, from what information I see there, I think it will fail for the same reason other vaccines for HIV fail, mutation rate.
I'll give a bit of background, when HIV was first isolated, scientists tried to sequence the genome, only to discover that it took more time to sequence a strain's genome than it did for there to be new strains. The HIV in Thailand is different than the HIV in the US. Vaccines like this have also failed because, even if it worked initially, the virus evolved too fast and the vaccine no longer protected people against the disease.
I would love to be wrong, I really would. But this is not enough for me to jump with joy.

I want to be hopeful as I do with all medical breakthroughs, but I know the reality of the situation. At the very least I'd have to see the original research not filtered through the mainstream media where "HIV VACCINE FOUND" sells more papers than "MAY STOP SOME PEOPLE CATCHING IT SOMETIMES" (which don't get me wrong is still a good thing).

How long before some douchebag says that vaccinating against HIV will only promote deviant sexual behavior? Already happened.

And it was Us Army sponsored! This is awesome! Stuff like this and the prosthetic arm project being funded by DARPA are a pretty good proof that the government can induce PLENTY of creativity and innovation.

Even though this won't make AIDS a thing of the past, it'll probably at least lower the death toll. (Fundy mode) This is the worst thing ever! With this vaccine, what'll punish the GAYS and ADULTERERS for having sex I don't God doesn't like?

I'm not even sure if it will do that, to be perfectly honest. The virus has an obscene mutation rate, it evolves FAST. Fast enough that odds are good by the time the vaccine is available, it will be outdated and useless. This isn't anything new at all, it's happened a lot in the past. A fairly simple article about this: linkAnd an excerpt from a more technical article linkOne of the earliest and most striking observations made about HIV is the extensive genetic variation that the virus has within individual hosts, particularly in the hypervariable regions of the env gene29; this variation makes HIV one of the fastest evolving of all organisms. Such rapid evolution is the result of an explosive combination of factors. First, the virus experiences a high rate of mutation, with reverse transcriptase making ~0.2 errors per genome during each replication cycle30, and further errors occurring during transcription from DNA by RNA Pol II polymerase. Second, HIV has remarkable replicatory dynamics: it has a viral generation time of ~2.5 days and produces ~1010–1012 new VIRIONS each day31. Finally, frequent recombination and natural selection further elevate its rate of evolutionary change

How long before some douchebag says that vaccinating against HIV will only promote deviant sexual behavior? Anyway, yay science! Mr. Turquoise About fifteen years ago. I caught a couple stories about what would later be considered failed attempts at the same, and the moral fucktards were whining about the then-hypothetical "cure" promoting loose women and gay sex.
