NEWARK, N.J. (WPIX) -- Newark police are investigating the alleged beating of a gay couple after a Britney Spears concert at the Prudential Center Saturday.
Victim Josh Kehoe told PIX News he and his partner Bobby Daniel Caldwell were walking back to their car a couple of blocks from the concert venue in downtown Newark when they were attacked by a group of 15 to 20 young men.
Kehoe claims the thugs left him badly beaten and bruised, and stole his cell phone. The youths also attempted to swipe Caldwell's wallet during the attack. The Kearny couple was taken to University Hospital, with Caldwell suffering extensive injuries to his jaw requiring doctors to wire his mouth shut, according to Kehoe.
He added the attackers called the two "faggots," which Kehoe says makes it a bias crime.
The Essex County prosecutors office, however, says police do not believe the incident was bias-related. That may be because the victims told cops a group of young women was attacked and had their purses stolen just a few minutes later, according to the police report filed.
The victims also told PIX News police presence at the Prudential Center was "barely visible." Kehoe says it took Newark Police nearly 45 minutes to get to the scene. The two have filed complaints with Newark Mayor Cory Booker's office.
Mayor Booker has since reached out to the victims, expressing his outrage over what happened.
Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy tells PIX News investigators are not yet calling the incident a bias crime, but say they may change that assessment if the continued investigation leads them there.
The investigation, so far, is leading police to believe that a teen party in downtown Newark may be linked to Saturday's attack. The attackers may have attended the massive gathering, which was said to have had over 500 attendees, according to McCarthy.
Police are now reviewing tapes from a number of surveillance cameras in the area, and are confident they will be able to arrest those responsible.
