when in reality, 'average people' get beaten, raped, killed, savaged, etc. daily with no such scrutiny. And what "reality" would that be? In an opposite universe, maybe. Watch the news, the media only goes nuts if an "average person," i.e. straight white person, goes missing or is murdered/raped. It's so omnipresent that is has become a cliche as this point... A minority of any kind gets killed or harmed, nobody seems to care.

'average people' get beaten, raped, killed, savaged, etc. daily with no such scrutiny. Average people rarely find themselves ignored by the cops on the level gays or blacks or what-have-you do. I'd love it if gays getting assaulted or killed got the same level of attention without the need for any special incentives. We have hate crime laws because that's not the case. We have affirmative action laws because people do discriminate in hiring practices. I don't like that hate crime laws exist, but nor do I like living my life in fear because I'm less likely to be protected should I get beat within an inch of my life, simply because I live in the midst of a rural area who has a large GBLT community but also a large disdain for said community. I'd gladly give up any perceived "special treatment," as so many call it, for equality. The problem being, said equality doesn't exist. There is disparity between the treatment of "average people" and the rest of us. Exactly.

Truly, the news is littered with missing blonde white women and their suspected black kidnappers. That's not to say it's always the case, mind, but that it's rare when you see it otherwise. Gay bashings do get glossed over, blacks get dismissed because the violence was probably gang or drug related, and of course, women are too hysterical to accurately determine whether they were threatened. Now, this specific case may not be a hate crime, but considered they were a gay couple who had people screaming "fag" at them, they might take it that way. And really, there should be an investigation on that level. Could be a coincidence....A lot of kids say "faggot" now, without even knowing what it means. It's become a generic pejorative, but that doesn't really eliminate the concern. There's also the issue of the difference in sentencing. White on black crime tends to be treated less severely than black on white. If it's known you're gay, there's a good chance your attacker will get a lesser sentence than others attacked with equal severity. That's assuming they bother to catch the guy, which becomes an issue in rural communities especially. The message that's being sent to minorities is really one that "you are worth less." If you were to believe the news, you'd get the idea that all blacks are gangbangers, all women are serial victims, and all gays are mincing fags. We're all stars now, in the minstrel show.
