While mixing it up in a fundie chatroom earlier today, the topic turned to parents. I commented that my dad wouldn't be pleased with me if I "found Christ." In fact, he'd be disappointed. A fundie then commented to me that if my dad knew the true beauty of a life filled with Jesus' love, he'd be overjoyed. After all, HER parents were. Wait, it gets better. Another fundie then said that she thought my dad would be proud of me "deep down." Right. My dad, who's a retired physics professor, who counts James Randi and Penn & Teller as his personal heroes, and who's been an atheist as long as he's been old enough to think for himself...MY DAD would be proud of me if I became a Christian. Deep down. It would have to be a secret, of course, what with all the shame and derision that's heaped on people for being Christian in this country. But maybe my dad has just been in Christian denial all these years. He's not really an atheist. We atheists KNOW God exists, and that Christ is our savior, we just don't want to acknowledge them. Maybe Dad just needs to remember what his life was like before he kicked religion. When he was a Jew.

Yeah. I find that little presumption amusing. Everyone is either a Christian or lapsed.

It's pretty much indicative of how Fundies deal with people. A complete and total absence of anything that could logically be called empathy.
There's something quite deeply troubing about the way they can't even comprehend the notion that people really, honestly, absolutely disagree with them. It's always self-delusion on the part of others, or the actions of Satan. How insecure do you need to be to invent mental illnesses or invoke the ultimate evil in the universe to explain a simple difference in opinion?

Be fair, MM. It's only their faith they're insecure about.

This is probably what irritates me the most about fundies. They can't possibly comprehend how anyone else can have another viewpoint, and they think they're 100% correct and know something that others don't. I was talking to a fundie once who told me that I should accept Jesus as my savior and explained how much better my life would be. I countered that I was content with my current life and saw no need for a "savior." And then the fundie went on that whole "That's what I thought too, but I know now. You don't know, but I do."
HOLY FUCKING CHRIST
Do NOT tell me what I don't know, asshole. Don't tell me that I am confused, and don't fucking pray for me. It displays an abundance of arrogance.

I don't like the way they pull the whole "I know what you REALLY think/feel/believe" thing.
First off, it's just rude. Period. I don't go around telling you what you "really" think, feel, or believe. Please give me the same courtesy.
Secondly, it's a classic abuse tactic. I should know, I've been there. It's a control thing, because the abuser has an irrational need to control their partner (or, for that matter, child), and literally dictates what the victim thinks, feels, and believes, whether or not the victim actually thinks/feels/believes that.
Beyond that, if there's something I don't know, I'd like to discover it for myself, thx; it's more fun that way. If I ASK, by all means, answer. Otherwise, STFU about it.
On that little tangent, I get annoyed at people who just presume to "help" me when I have a handle on things. Yes, I'm disabled. If I need (or want) help, I WILL ASK. (Exception: Holding the door is always cool. ALWAYS.)

I hate that about fundies. I don't believe you have to be agnostic or an atheist to feel happy in life. Different people need different things. Maybe some people need to believe in God to feel happy.
But to fundies? You HAVE TO BELIEVE IN GOD OR YOU'RE MISERABLE!

Then why are so many believers, you know, MISERABLE? Obviously their belief in God isn't making them happy....

Ugh. That's quite revolting.
Makes me think back to my dad. He tried to tell his father (my grandpa) that life was so miserable for him because he never knew the love of Jesus. Of course, this was on my grandpa's deathbed, and my grandpa was pretty damn angry when dad turned on a televangelist and then hid the remote.
I dunno, I always thought my grandpa had a crappy life because of that whole Holocaust thing. Losing the entirety of one's family and being shoved in a Soviet gulag and then hearing that your parents were just shot on sight would kinda put a damper on my life. Oh, and that he was Jewish.

One big problem that a lot of Christians seem to have, and that I try to avoid, is that they insist they know what others think and feel better than those people themselves. It just seems arogant to me.

Obviously those people aren't really believers. Or they aren't really miserable, God's just testing them so that they can better know his love when he makes their suffering stop. On the Jesus Christ show, on the radio on Sunday mornings (no bullshit), Jesus is fond of saying that there's a difference between happiness and joy, and between sadness and sorrow, and that even though Christians may be sad sometimes, they're always joyful, but even when atheists are happy, they're really full of sorrow.
