OK, so I was planning on making a scary video for my YouTube channel, which currently only holds retarded wackiness, due to it being a group channel. But this is a more serious affair. I have a camcorder and access to the basement of the apartment building and a vague idea involving someone who has gone crazy. How can I make this scary? How can I give this a good atmosphere? How can I keep the viewer hooked? Halp.

I've found the voices of young children giggling and chanting nursery rhymes in dark places creepy in the past, particularly if linked to something in the scene.
*character comes across building superintendent, head caved in messily* Child's voice: Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall, All the king's horses and all the king's men, Couldn't put humpty together again... *innocent giggling*

Discordant calliope music is also good at creepy.

Also, do as little as possible. It's easy to wreck a spooky video by cramming in too much.

If you want people to jump, a good idea is to have a singe continuous noise, and then a noise that seems out of place, the camera freezes, and turns slowly towards the source, but nothing is there, except a foot print in the dust.
Maybe a sliver of light revealing something freaky. For example, a slice of light falls between a crack in the wall. The camera gets closer, closer, an arm and hand are revealed. The camera zooms in, then the arm slides out of view. Then you run away, but the exit slams shut before you reach it. Everything goes silent, and you hear faint laughter somewhere in the room
Could you put up some pics of the area you wish to film in?

Reverse reverb. It's just exactly weird enough a sonic process that it sounds fucking peculiar, but it's also subtle enough that people can't really place what's "wrong" with it.
A tritone interval, transposed way, way up, to the point of scarely being audible, playing continuously in scene.

Thanks for the suggestions! But I don't know how to upload pictures of the area.

Music box tunes in minor key tonality. Add slight reverb for distant feeling. Also, this as background:

Try throwing in a moment or two of complete silence. We're so used to hearing music or ambience at all times in movies that silence can really throw us off.

Would an incredibly quiet, psychotic stalker help? Sample quote: stuttery "I j-j-just, I just feel so elated. (rises in volume) I'm just so happy that you are here. So happy. (goes quiet again) Can I keep you? Can I keep you? I love you. I've always loved you. I could capture you and put you in a jar. But then what? (starts talking to self) I thought myself an unworthy thing, despairing of my curse all the time. (back to main character) Is my hook the perfect size to snag your heart? The heart is the strongest muscle and the weakest impulse. Tell it to love"
I don't know; this is kind of experimental.
