How do students and teachers reconcile church teachings with what is presented in schools considering the bom is regarded as fact and not a parable? Two words: cognitive dissonance. Don't know if that's worse than telling children that the teachers don't know the truth and not to say anything about it. The former breaks their mind, the latter their trust.

So where do the Cylons come in? The original BSG was meant to be a parable for the flight to Utah. So any evidence of actual cylons rusted away?Sorry, I missed the word parable there. You meant it was fiction, like your religious accounts of the Pre-Columbian Meso-America.

How do students and teachers reconcile church teachings with what is presented in schools considering the bom is regarded as fact and not a parable? A good science teacher will have already made it clear that students are to leave religion at the classroom door. My college geology prof actually made it a point to read a prepared statement to this effect at the beginning of each semester. Likewise, a good parent will have explained to their child that science and religion don't always agree, but that when it comes to science class they need to hear what the teacher says.

So, basically what Death said here:Don't know if that's worse than telling children that the teachers don't know the truth and not to say anything about it. The former breaks their mind, the latter their trust. Seems like they manage both! Isn't that great? Then they'll have an untrusting, broken mind! All the better to guilt trip them with to make more itty-bitty Mormons who can grow up to have teeny-weeny Mormons of their own and thus give continued source of tithes.

You do know that don't you. ok, how about if I ask you. Can the BoM be right when peer reviewed scientific archaelogical findings say different?

Likewise, a good parent will have explained to their child that science and religion don't always agree, but that when it comes to science class they need to hear what the teacher says. This reads as if you didn't finish the thought. Good Parent: "Now kids, when you go to science class, you need to pay attention and hear what the teacher has to say. But don't forget, the BOM explains all this and does it better and more accurately because the BOM is the truth. So, you listen to what the teacher says, just don't believe it. You only have to remember it so you can get good grades on the tests." Now, the reason I didn't put a good Mormon parent saying the above is because any fundie parent could say it, Mormon or not. Just substitute Bible for BOM.

It was at a public high school in Texas to be precise. When I say that we should give Texas back to Mexico, I'm only half kidding.

It was specifically a Biology class, as I recall. She said that she didn't believe in this stuff, but she had to teach it by law and we'd better put the right answers on the test, but we didn't have to actually think it was true. I didn't learn much about evolution that year. Fucking Texas.

It's easy to argue the primitive MesoAmerican peoples were transplanted Jews when even the public school teachers are telling the students that what they are teaching them is incorrect. (Attempt to get this thread back on topic.)

And just for the sake of argument, there are plenty of bigoted, stupid people who live in the North, too. Just for reference's sake. The loudest people get the most attention here.

Yeah, I've encountered them. I live in the south myself, just not in the deep south. But it isn't much better here. And true that about the loudest people.
