How has it taken this long for me to hear about this? Vermont Senate panel approves gay marriage billI realize full well that this isn't in law yet, but it is most certainly a good start. Much better than some states (like mine) which have defined marriage as purely heterosexual in their state constitution. Here's hoping that they do the right thing and piss fundies off in the process.

Vermont is obviously too close to Canada. The decency has rubbed off.

I live in Georgia. We had sodomy laws on the books until the Supreme Court ruled them unconstitutional (I think they're still on the books in fact.) We'd probably still ban interracial marriage if it weren't for those pesky liebrals up in Washington.
I pray that my children will live to see gay marriage in Georgia.

I'm glad to see this. I'm from Connecticut, I was very happy when we approved it. Unfortunately, my hardcore Catholic uncle was over my house the night it was announced on the news... took me a few hours to get my hearing back.

If I recall correctly, Vermont also polls about an 11% support for secession (or did a few years ago), the highest in the nation. COINCIDENCE?!

Can't believe I didn't post about this.
Anyway, now we're gonna feel real good about our annual maple syrup run!

Stephen Cable, president of the group Vermont Renewal, an organization that opposes same-sex marriage, said the civil unions law and the possible passage of gay marriage bill shows the state "no longer seeks to promote that each child have a mother and a father. And I think that's shameful and very sad"
Hold on, let me call in my divorced parents from opposite sides of town and my brother's single mom ex girlfriend to laugh at how stupid you are. God this is a dumb argument. When the hell did we get some standard of parenting besides not beating or starving them?

Much better than some states (like mine) which have defined marriage as purely heterosexual in their state constitution. Here's hoping that they do the right thing and piss fundies off in the process. Do keep in mind that our Civil Unions act actually ended up defining marriage as purely heterosexual So until this makes it, we're a "separate but equal" state--maybe not as bad as states which ban gay couples, but Civil Unions are not a real substitute. Which is why there's been a push for gay marriage in the last couple of years. MaybeNever, there are a lot of secessionists in Vermont, though it'll never happen. But I wouldn't be surprised if recent figures were still 11% or above. GreenEyedLilo--Where do you run to in Vermont? Just curious. since my little town is part of the tourism hub, and all. thejebusfire--Wanna crash on my couch? JonathanE--If that was true, Maine would have been converted first. God, the Canucks are Maine's Mexicans...Except, of course, nobody wants to stay there.... I kid Maine...But Vermont is so brutally self-loathing, I can't imagine this being done out of decency. It's probably like that episode of the Simpsons where they hope to get extra money by marrying queers. Gotta admit, though, I got a tingle at the thought.

You get a tingle whenever someone makes a "Bitch at Kane Knight Thread" over at TPWW

No, but I do get a tingle every time you're in the area. Well, not so much a tingle as my skin crawling.

Separate is inherently unequal.

Separate but equal is still preferable to separate and unequal. Tell that to the blacks the SBE laws targeted. They weren't equal, not in any sense. CU laws say "you guys can't marry. Ever. But here, we'll give you a portion of those rights, completely non-transferrable, and call that enough. Because these unions are limited, you will probably run into problems that would not happen if we had given you all the rights, and you may have to fight legal battles not to have what limited rights we gave you overturned." Marriage will still mean denied rights, but at least it'll be because the Feds are jackasses, not because the guys who are telling us we have the same rights as hets are jackasses.
