So, one of the rivers in Minnesota that is flooding right now runs literally right outside the back door of my apartment. I live on the 3rd floor, so I'm not TOO worried, but it still sucks. Today it rained most of the day, and it's supposed to be the same shitty weather the rest of the week as well. I took a few pics before work this afternoon. This is looking out the window of the second floor of the stairwell: From outside the back door: I saw chunks of wood floating down the river. And then... See this? That's a WHOLE TREE!! floating down the river: !!!!! A bit further downstream: And this is at the park that's down the road a piece: Just for reference, this is looking out the back door of my apt in better weather; it's really something like 20 feet down to the river.

That sucks! The Thames flooded in Ontario last month too. And fundies still aren't convinced of the effects of climate change. Image from local newspaper.

I'm not sure it's due to climate change; we just had a fuckton of snow and it all melted at once, and then rained on top of it. >.<

We've never had a full blown flood here, but we've had a few "flash floods".
One time it rained so hard our street almost looked like a stream. You could see the water flowing down the street and splashing against parked cars. After the rain me and a friend went spalshing through the puddels in our swimsuites.

Damn girl, those pictures look like they could've been taken right here they are so similar. Same situation here; ground froze early last fall, locking in moisture. Now we have a record snow melting quickly due to record rainfall and the water having nowhere to go but across land. The sandbagging is in full effect here, there are convoys of sandbags getting police escorts, there is overland flooding, parts of interstates and highways shut down due to water flowing across them, towns without water, evacuations taking place (detroit lakes mn.), refugees are staying at the grade and middle schools in my neighbourhood, there have been numerous accidents (car crashes, slipping on ice, exhaustion from sandbagging etc) with at least one death and the lights were just flickering here a little bit ago.
And tonight a snowstorm blew in from the west so you should be feeling the bite of the dropping temps anytime now as you are just east of me.
Ye gods this place is a shithole.

I just hope this doesn't drastically lengthen the time it takes to reconstruct the Hwy 23 bridge across the Mississippi into St. Cloud. I hate having to take the detour (even though it's a simple detour), and I really hope that that bridge doesn't suffer any damage from the flooding. Also, I don't look forward to the snow coming my way, as I have to go to St. Cloud to get a refill on meds tomorrow. Oh, and before I forget: nice pics.

Wow, those are some pretty worrying pics there aqualung. Good to hear that you're out of harms way though, but still...
We had some flooding here a few weeks back, easily the biggest flood in my lifetime, but all it really did was disrupt people. I don't think anybody died, since most of the villages in my area are on hills the flooding just blocked of roads and left all the settlements alone.

Are you part of the Red River watershed? You and Red[/color] can build rafts and ride north to Manitoba and freedom.

I'm glad you're OK, but be careful. Those are some pretty scary pics.
At least you're on the third floor, though.
